Some highlights for the week:
May 9
Red Faber didn't pitch particularly well, but he hit a three-run homer during a six-run rally in the sixth and Forks won at Ephrata 8-6. Greg Maddux out-pitched Felix Hernandez and Moses Lake topped Hoquiam 3-1. Javier Vazquez pitched a seven-hitter and Robin Ventura had four hits to lead a 15-hit attack as Vancouver routed Long Beach 12-2. Roberto Clemente's pinch, two-run homer in the seventh put Cashmere ahead, and the C's held on to beat Ocean Shores 4-2. David Wells pitched seven solid innings in his return from the injured list and Wenatchee beat North Bend 7-2.
May 10
Juan Marichal pitched a six-hitter and RBI doubles by Stan Musial and Edgar Martinez in the eighth gave Moses Lake a 2-1 win at Forks. Harry Heilmann went 4-for-4 as Hoquiam pounded out 16 hits in an 11-2 romp over Quincy. Buster Posey drove in a couple of runs during Pasco's four-run fifth and the P's topped Jefferson County 6-3. Roy Campanella had four RBI and Ty Cobb and Oscar Charleston had three hits each as Cashmere drubbed Long Beach 11-3. Carlos Delgado hit two doubles and drove in four runs during Davenport's 8-2 win over Ocean Shores. Willie Stargell blasted a three-run homer in the top of the tenth and Bruce Sutter held off a Goldendale rally in the bottom of the frame as Snoqualmie won 4-3. Vida Blue pitched a two-hitter and Bainbridge Island blanked Vancouver 6-0.
May 11
Ephrata scored four in the top of the tenth on a triple by Jim Edmonds and a homer by Dwight Evans and beat Aberdeen 5-1. Forks took the lead against Moses Lake by scoring four in the bottom of the eighth, three on a triple by Jimmie Foxx, but the M's answered with two in the ninth on a pinch double by Paul Molitor and beat the F's 5-4. Chase Utley had four hits and Juan Uribe three as Quincy outscored Hoquiam 7-2. Reggie Jackson drove in three runs as Randy Johnson and Jefferson County topped Satchel Paige and Pasco 5-2. Ted Williams hit three homers and went 4-for-4 with four runs and five RBI to lead Wenatchee in a 13-5 rout of Renton. Lou Gehrig's three-run homer capped a four-run rally in the bottom of the ninth as Goldendale beat Snoqualmie 6-3. Harvey Kuenn went 4-for-4 and scored four runs and Harmon Killebrew went 4-for-5 and drove in five as Kelso thumped Tumwater 8-2. Johnny Bench led the way with three RBI as Bainbridge Island outscored Vancouver 10-4. Gary Nolan and Joe Nathan combined on an eight-hitter and Trot Nixon homered and drove in all of North Bend's runs in a 3-1 win at Yakima.
May 12
Dock Ellis pitched eight strong innings and Dennis Eckersley earned his seventh save as Ephrata edged Aberdeen 3-2. Christy Mathewson pitched a six-hitter and hit a home run, earning his first win of the season in a 6-0 shutout of Forks. Rickey Henderson scored three runs and Rogers Hornsby knocked in a trio, backing Roy Halladay as Hoquiam beat Quincy 6-2. Pasco hit six home runs, including two by Vada Pinson, in a 10-5 romp over Jefferson County. Charleston capped a four-run rally in the seventh with a two-run double, and Cashmere topped Long Beach 7-3. Tony Oliva beat Davenport with his wheels; Oliva led off the bottom of the ninth with a single, stole second and went to third on a throwing error by catcher Bill Dickey, and scored on Al Oliver's sacrifice fly as Ocean Shores edged the D's 2-1. Bernie Williams hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth and Wenatchee bested Renton 6-4. Troy Glaus smacked a two-run pinch homer in the bottom of the eighth and Goldendale prevailed over Snoqualmie 7-5. North Bend plated a run in the top of the 16th on a triple by Phil Nevin and a single by Bill North to win at Yakima 3-2.
May 13
Aberdeen scored all of its runs in the bottom of the ninth, the game-winner on a two-out single by Moises Alou, and beat Ephrata 4-3. Eddie Mathews hit a three-run homer in the top of the ninth and Moses Lake beat Forks 5-3. Todd Helton hit a two-out homer in the bottom of the ninth and Hoquiam edged Quincy 4-3. Pasco plated three in the top of the ninth to beat Jefferson County 5-4. Roberto Clemente capped a six-run rally in the seventh with a three-run homer and Cashmere whipped Long Beach 8-1. In a battle of Dodger greats Claude Osteen and Ocean Shores beat Don Drysdale and Davenport 4-2. Ted Williams hit his 18th homer, a three-run shot in the third, and Wenatchee led all the way in a 5-3 win over Renton. In a battle between Braves greats Tom Glavine and Goldendale beat John Smoltz and Snoqualmie 4-3. Luis Tiant and a couple of relievers held Kelso to six hits and Pie Traynor went 4-for-4 as Tumwater triumphed 4-1. Vancouver scored all of its runs in the bottom of the ninth, beating Bainbridge Island 5-1 on a grand slam by Jose Valentin.
May 14
Carl Erskine carried a shutout into the ninth inning but needed relief help from Eckersley to nail down Ephrata's 4-3 win over Aberdeen. Bernie Williams drew a bases-loaded walk with two out in the bottom of the 15th to give Wenatchee a 3-2 win over Renton. Jerry Koosman allowed just three hits and no earned runs over seven innings and Kelso beat Tumwater 2-1. Nevin's sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth plated the go-ahead run and North Bend won at Yakima 3-2.
May 15
Roberto Alomar knocked in the go-ahead run with a single in the top of the ninth and Aberdeen beat Moses Lake 4-3. Quincy scored four in the bottom of the seventh, three of them on a home run by Willie Upshaw, and defeated Forks 6-3. Larry Doby's two-run homer in the fourth was all Davenport got or needed in a 2-1 win over Long Beach. Sadaharu Oh hit two homers and drove in five runs as Ocean Shores topped Ephrata 8-5. Cool Papa Bell scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth on an errant pickoff throw by Troy Percival as Bainbridge Island beat Pasco 6-5. Geoff Zahn pitched a complete game and earned his first win of the season as Yakima bested Renton 6-3.
Injuries
Howard Ehmke left a May 9 game with a sore shoulder and may be out for a couple of weeks. Geroge Earnshaw was called up to take Ehmke's spot on the Ephrata roster. Dolf Luque left his May 13 start with a stiff elbow and will be sidelined for a couple of weeks. Cliff Lee was called up to take his spot in the Long Beach rotation.
