Schmidt nabs POTW honors for A to Z League

Mike Schmidt of Snoqualmie clubbed five home runs on the way to A to Z League player of the week honors for the week ending May 22. Schmidt hit .500 (14-for-28) for the week, drove in eight runs and scored nine. Other top contenders for the recognition were Roberto Alomar of Aberdeen, who hit .500 (10-for-20) with eight runs scored, and Darin Erstad of Ephrata, who hit .529 (9-for-17) and scored seven runs.

Some highlights for the week:

May 16

Henry Aaron, Joe Adcock, and Alan Ashby homered as Aberdeen topped Moses Lake 7-5. Forks scored three in the top of the ninth against Dan Quisenberry and defeated Quincy 3-1. Felix Hernandez pitched a three-hitter and Torii Hunter drove in three runs as Hoquiam thumped Kelso 8-2. Andruw Jones homered in the fifth and then singled home the tie-breaking run in the eighth as Jefferson County edged Cashmere 2-1. Mark Langston improved his record to 5-1 as Long Beach beat Davenport 7-3. Darrell Evans had three hits to lead Ephrata's 14-hit attack in a 7-3 win over Ocean Shores. Honus Wagner had three hits and scored three runs to lead Wenatchee past Snoqualmie 6-4. Curtis Granderson hit a three-run, pinch homer in the top of the ninth and Goldendale beat Tumwater 4-1. Mike Piazza and Dave Parker had four RBI each and Pasco scored seven in the second on the way to a 13-6 drubbing of Bainbridge Island. Ellis Valentine, Ozzie Virgil, and Jose Valentin backed Fernando Valenzuela with home runs as Vancouver defeated North Bend 7-3. Renton scored two in the first and five in the second, then held on for an 8-6 win over Yakima.

May 17

Dennis Martinez scattered nine hits and Joe Mauer went 4-for-4 with two RBI as Moses Lake blanked Aberdeen 8-0. Wes Ferrell pitched a complete game and Todd Frazier hit a pair of homers as Forks bested Quincy 8-3. Jumbo Kimbro's bases-loaded triple highlighted Kelso's four-run fifth in a 5-4 win over Hoquiam. Walter Johnson notched his first win of the season as Jefferson County topped Cashmere 5-3. Kenny Lofton had three hits and two RBI as Long Beach defeated Davenport 6-3. Del Ennis had a homer, double, and three RBI in Ephrata's 8-3 win over Ocean Shores. David Wells allowed just one run on five hits over eight innings and Wenatchee beat Snoqualmie 3-1. Nomar Garciaparra had three hits, including a pair of homers, and drove in five leading Goldendale's 13-6 romp over Tumwater. Lou Brock, subbing for the injured Barry Bonds, went 4-for-4 and drove in four runs as Bainbridge Island edged Pasco 10-9. Brock scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth, getting a single with two out, stealing second, and coming home on a double by Jeff Bagwell. Frank Viola pitched a two-hitter and Bobby Veach had four hits as Vancouver blanked North Bend 5-0. Jordan Zimmerman pitched a complete game and Robin Yount had three RBI during Yakima's 4-1 win over Renton.

May 18

Christy Mathewson allowed just one run on four hits over eight innings, and Stan Musial, Willie Mays, and Johnny Mize backed him with home runs as Moses Lake beat Aberdeen 6-1. Kazuhisa Inao pitched a seven-hitter and Del Unser had three hits, including a homer and a triple, and Quincy bested Forks 4-1. Clayton Kershaw fanned 10 in seven innings and Kelso unloaded on Hoquiam with 14 hits in a 10-2 romp. Derek Jeter went 6-for-6 and drove in three runs to lead the hit parade as Jefferson County outscored Cashmere 9-6. Davenport and Long Beach tangled in another slugfest, with the D's getting three RBI each from Joe DiMaggio and Rick Dempsey in a 10-7 win. Ennis hit a three-run double to snap a tie in the bottom of the seventh and Ephrata held on to beat Ocean Shores 6-3. John Smoltz pitched seven solid innings in his return from the injured list and Snoqualmie topped Wenatchee 3-1. Tumwater got just two hits in the game, but scored six in the fourth on a single, four walks, and a grand slam by Bobby Thomson and beat Goldendale 6-4. Piazza and Parker homered as Pasco beat Bainbridge Island 3-1. Katsuya Nomura had a homer and three RBI as North Bend beat Vancouver 9-5. Babe Ruth had a homer and three RBI and Steve Rogers, Dave Righetti, and Mariano Rivera combined on a two-hitter as Renton defeated Yakima 4-1.

May 19

Hunter hit a two-run homer in the top of the 16th and Hoquiam beat Kelso 6-4. Roger Clemens notched his fifth victory of the season, allowing just one unearned run on five hits in seven innings, and Cashmere bested Jefferson County 5-1. Matt Wieters hit a pair of home runs and had four RBI, and Ted Williams also went deep, and Wenatchee stopped a six-run Snoqualmie rally in the bottom of the ninth just in time to win 9-8. Gehrig missed a cycle by a single, going 3-for-5 with a homer, triple, and a double and driving in three during Goldendale's 6-4 win at Tumwater. Javier Vazquez and Ed Vande Berg combined on a three-hitter and Vancouver thumped North Bend 8-1.

May 20

Dan Uggla hit a two-run homer to cap Quincy's four-run ninth in a 6-5 win at Aberdeen. Pedro Martinez improved his record to 6-0, throwing eight innings of six-hit, one-run baseball, and Moses Lake won a 9-1 laugher at Ocean Shores. George Brett hit a three-run homer to cap Bainbridge Island's four-run seventh in a 5-4 win at Kelso. Cal Ripken, Jr. hit a three-run homer to cap Renton's five-run rally in the eighth and the R's came from behind to beat Vancouver 7-6. Hi Smith pitched an eight-hit shutout and Mike Schmidt hit a two-run homer in the first as Snoqualmie beat Yakima 2-0.

May 21

Roberto Alomar and Luke Appling both had three hits and two runs scored at the top of the lineup, and Johnny Antonelli, Larry Andersen, and Rick Aguilera combined on a six-hitter as Aberdeen beat Quincy 5-4. Dwight Gooden pitched a three-hitter with no walks and five strikeouts as Goldendale blanked Forks 4-0. Catfish Hunter returned from the injured list and pitched a four-hitter and Rogers Hornsby drove in three runs as Hoquiam blanked Cashmere and Steve Carlton 4-0. Tony Oliva and Al Oliver combined for five hits, five runs, and four RBI and Ocean Shores beat Moses Lake 7-4. Cesar Tovar's RBI single in the top of the tenth snapped a tie and Tumwater held on to beat Wenatchee 3-2. Al Kaline went 4-for-5 and Kimbro drove in three runs as Kelso outscored Bainbridge Island 7-5. Don Newcombe pitched a two-hitter and drove in a run as North Bend blanked Pasco 2-0. Brooks Robinson hit a pinch homer in the bottom of the tenth and Renton beat Vancouver 2-1. Tris Speaker and Ted Simmons homered and Snoqualmie and Tom Seaver defeated Yakima 6-3.

May 22

Pete Alexander allowed just two hits over 8-2/3 innings and knocked in a run in Aberdeen's 5-2 win over Quincy. Willie Foster pitched a complete game and went 4-for-4 with two runs and an RBI as Forks clobbered Goldendale 12-3. Oscar Charleston and Rod Carew had three hits each to lead Cashmere to a 6-4 win at Hoquiam. Ennis hit a two-run homer off Sparky Lyle in the top of the eighth and Ephrata beat Long Beach 4-3. Juan Marichal and Randy Myers combined on a six-hitter and Moses Lake topped Ocean Shores 3-1. Willie Wilson and Matt Wieters had three hits each to lead Wenatchee in a 7-5 win over Tumwater. Bainbridge Island scored four in the fourth, three on a homer by Johnny Bench, and beat Kelso 4-2. Jim Palmer allowed just one hit--a single by Tim Naehring in the fourth--and Pasco thumped North Bend 8-0. Nolan Ryan pitched a four-hitter and fanned 11 and Frank Robinson hit a pair of homers as Renton blanked Vancouver 4-0. Schmidt had four hits, including a home run, and Speaker and Al Simmons both connected for three safeties as Snoqualmie drubbed Yakima 11-4.

Injuries

Clemens left his May 19 start after the end of the seventh inning because of a stiff shoulder and is expected to be out for a couple of weeks. He hit the injured list and Bartolo Colon was activated to take The Rocket's spot in Cashmere's rotation. Bob Welch left his May 21 start with a strained forearm and is expected to be out of action for a couple of weeks. Brian Wilson was called up to take Welch's spot on the Wenatchee roster.
