Bonds drives in 16 to cinch player of the week honors

Barry Bonds of Bainbridge Island captured player of the week honors in the A to Z League for the week ending May 8. Bonds slugged six homers and had 16 RBI for the week, leading the B's to a 5-1 record. Lou Gehrig of Goldendale, who was also a runner up for the award last week, had another big week at the dish, batting .478 and hitting four home runs and driving home 10 runs. Martin Dihigo of Davenport had four homers and nine RBI.

May 2

Henry Aaron had three RBI and Roberto Alomar two to lead Aberdeen past Cashmere 8-3. Forks scored five in the bottom of the third and rolled to an 8-5 win over Davenport. Stan Hack homered in the bottom of the tenth to give Hoquiam a 7-6 win over Ephrata. Home Run Johnson singled with the sacks full in the bottom of the 13th to give Jefferson County a 5-4 win over Moses Lake. David Ortiz hit a pair of homers and Mel Ott also went deep as Ocean Shores overcame an early 5-0 deficit to beat Yakima 8-7. Curtis Granderson slugged a pinch-hit grand slam to tie the game in the ninth, and Goldendale scored three in the top of the 13th to beat North Bend 8-5. Nolan Ryan pitched a six-hitter and Renton blanked Kelso 2-0. Vada Pinson and Mike Piazza homered to power Pasco past Snoqualmie 7-3. Danny Tartabull hit a two-run homer to give Tumwater the lead in the top of the eighth and the T's held on to edge Vancouver 4-3.

May 3

Pete Alexander pitched eight solid innings and Dick Allen and Joe Adcock homered as Aberdeen topped Cashmere 5-2. Carl Furillo homered in the bottom of the tenth to give Forks a 5-4 win over Davenport. Felix Hernandez fanned 13 over 7 2/3 innings but wasn't around for the decision when Todd Helton's RBI double in the bottom of the ninth gave Hoquiam a 3-2 win over Ephrata. Carney Lansford's pinch-hit, two-run homer in the bottom of the tenth gave Long Beach a 9-7 win over Quincy. Ott went 4-for-6 with two RBI, including a bases-loaded single in the bottom of the tenth that won it for Ocean Shores 7-6 over Yakima. Barry Bonds knocked in four runs and Tommy Bridges scattered six hits in Bainbridge Island's 9-3 win at Wenatchee. Gehrig, Goose Goslin, and Granderson each drove in three runs and Bob Gibson pitched a three-hitter as Goldendale pounded North Bend 10-2. Babe Ruth hit a two-run triple during a three-run eighth that gave Renton a 7-5 win at Kelso.

May 4

Willie Foster and Rollie Fingers combined on a five hitter, Frank Frisch and Yutaka Fukumoto hit solo homers in the eighth, and Forks blanked Davenport 2-0. Tim Hudson allowed just one run on five hits in seven innings and drove in a pair with a single in the second as Hoquiam topped Ephrata 4-2. Emil Yde fired a two-hitter and Yakima blanked Ocean Shores 6-0. Warren Spahn scattered 10 hits in a complete-game effort and Duke Snider drove in three runs as Snoqualmie beat Pasco 6-3. Arky Vaughan tripled with one out in the tenth and scored on a base hit by Ellis Valentine as Vancouver edged Tumwater 4-3.

May 5

Luis Aparicio hit a pair of homers and drove in all of Aberdeen's runs in a 3-1 win at Davenport. Derek Jeter's homer in the top of the eighth snapped a 2-all tie as Jefferson County topped Quincy 3-2. Cal Ripken, Jr.'s home run in the bottom of the eighth snapped a 4-4 tie and Renton went on to beat Goldendale 6-4. Barry Bonds led off the bottom of the tenth with a homer off Cy Young for the only run of the contest as Bainbridge Island defeated Yakima 1-0.

May 6 

Aaron hit a three-run homer in the top of the tenth and Aberdeen held on to beat Davenport 5-3. In what may be the sloppiest game of the year, there were seven errors in all and 14 hits per side as Ephrata outscored Forks 12-9. Torii Hunter and Gabby Hartnett homered and Hoquiam topped Moses Lake 8-3. Derek Lee hit a pair of doubles and drove in five runs during Long Beach's 11-3 rout of Vancouver. Lefty Grove, Eric Gagne, and Goose Gossage combined on a six-hitter and Goldendale edged Renton 3-1. Jimmy Key bested Tom Seaver as Kelso took a close one from Snoqualmie 2-1. Gene Tenace hit a pinch, two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh and Tumwater held on to beat Pasco 5-3. Bert Blyleven tossed a three-hitter and Barry Bonds hit his tenth homer of the season as Bainbridge Island blanked Yakima 6-0.

May 7

Wenatchee piled up 15 hits in an 8-2 win over North Bend. Ken Griffey, Jr. hit a pair of homers and drove in three runs as Goldendale beat Renton 4-2. Bret Saberhagen pitched a four-hitter and outdueled Sandy Koufax as Snoqualmie blanked Kelso 4-0. Gaylord Perry pitched a five-hitter and Pasco defeated Tumwater 7-2. Barry Bonds hit a pair of homers and drove in seven runs, and his dad,  Bobby Bonds went deep, too as Bainbridge Island routed Yakima 11-3.

May 8

Davenport slugged four homers in outscoring Aberdeen 8-3. Furillo's homer in the top of the 13th snapped a tie and Forks held on to beat Ephrata 7-6. Hoquiam scored three in the eighth and then two in the ninth on a homer by Dave Henderson in a come-from-behind 7-6 win at Moses Lake. Ichiro had three hits and scored three runs and Willie Upshaw drove in three as Quincy thumped Jefferson County 8-4. Vancouver scored four in the bottom of the eighth, three on a triple by Andy VanSlyke, and beat Long Beach 7-6. Miguel Cabrera hit two homers and drove in five runs and Cashmere bested Ocean Shores 7-5. North Bend scored all of its runs in the first inning and beat Wenatchee 5-3. Gehrig had four RBI and Nomar Garciaparra had two as Goldendale topped Renton 6-4. Curt Schilling pitched a seven-hitter and fanned 12 as Snoqualmie blanked Kelso and Clayton Kershaw 7-0. Mike Piazza went 4-for-5 with three runs and Terry Pendleton drove in three as Pasco bested Tumwater 6-3. Yogi Berra's homer in the bottom of the eight snapped a tie and Bainbridge Island edged Yakima 3-2.
