Bainbridge boasts league's best record, Charleston named player of the week

Oscar Charleston of Cashmere was named A to Z League player of the week for the week ending April 24. Charleston went 9-for-20 (.450) on the week with a double, triple, and ten RBI. Ryne Sandberg of Snoqualmie was a runner-up for the honor, batting .600 for the week (12-for-20) with a double, triple, three runs, and four RBI.

After three weeks of A to Z League play Bainbridge Island boasts the best record in the loop at 12-4, having won six of its last seven. The B's have a four-game lead over Snoqualmie in the Puget Division. Forks and Ocean Shores are both 11-5 and tied for the lead in the Coast Division. Davenport, also 11-5, leads the East Division. Goldendale and Vancouver at 10-6 are knotted atop the South Division.

April 18

Henry Aaron and Joe Adcock hit solo homers in the sixth inning, and Aberdeen edged Jefferson County 2-1. Tom Haller hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth to snap a tie and give Hoquiam a 6-4 win over Forks. Claude Osteen of Ocean Shores scattered nine hits in an 8-1 complete game win over Long Beach. Charleston had three hits and six RBI as Cashmere romped at Moses Lake 11-6. Bobby Doerr drove in all three Davenport runs in their 3-2, 12-inning win at Ephrata. Barry Bonds hit a three-run homer in the top of the seventh and Bainbridge Island held on to win at Snoqualmie 5-3. Gary Nolan and Tom Niedenfuer combined on a five-hitter and North Bend won at Renton 4-1.

April 19

Martin Dihigo went 5-for-5 with a double, homer, and four RBI leading Davenport's 17-hit attack in a 10-2 rout of Ephrata. David Wells and two relievers combined on a four-hitter for Wenatchee and Ted Williams and Frank White homered as the W's shut out Pasco 3-0. Greg Vaughn went 4-for-4 and drove in three runs in Vancouver's 8-4 win at Yakima. Barry Bonds homered in the top of the sixth to snap a 1-all tie and Bainbridge Island held on to edge Snoqualmie 2-1. Phil Niekro pitched eight solid innings and Irv Noren and Katsuya Nomura homered as North Bend topped Renton 5-2.

April 20

Al Oliver drove in four runs during Ocean Shores' 5-1 win at Forks. Charleston had three hits, including a single that plated Eddie Collins with the winning run in the bottom of the eleventh as Cashmere edged Quincy 2-1. Bob Elliott hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eleventh and Ephrata topped Moses Lake 5-4. Hank Greenberg had four RBI and Lou Gehrig three as Goldendale routed Yakima 12-1. Babe Ruth's three-run homer capped a four-run rally in the eighth as Renton came from behind to edge Snoqualmie 5-4.

April 21

Dick Allen had three hits, including two home runs, and six RBI as Aberdeen whipped Long Beach 9-5. George Foster had three hits, including his fifth homer of the season, and Forks bested Ocean Shores 6-4. Gabby Hartnett had a homer and three RBI as Hoquiam topped Jefferson County 4-3. Miguel Cabrera hit a three run homer to cap a five-run rally in the bottom of the ninth as Cashmere stunned Quincy 6-3. Dihigo had a homer, double, and three RBI as Davenport outscored North Bend 8-6. Jim Edmonds had four hits, including an RBI single in the bottom of the 12th that gave Ephrata a 2-1 win over Moses Lake. Smokey Joe Williams spun a seven-hitter and Ted Williams drove in three runs in Wenatchee's 8-2 win over Vancouver. Tom Glavine pitched seven strong innings and Goldendale bested Yakima 4-1. Jim Palmer left his start in the first inning, but five relievers finished a five hitter as Pasco won at Kelso 3-1. Snoqualmie racked up 17 hits and thumped Renton 11-6.

April 22

Wes Ferrell, John Franco, and Rollie Fingers combined on a six-hitter and Forks topped Ocean Shores 3-1. Fergie Jenkins pitched a two-hitter and Dave Justice drove in four runs as Jefferson County beat Hoquiam 8-0. Roy Campanella snapped a 1-all tie with a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh, and Cashmere held on to edge Quincy 3-2. Darrell Evans hit a pair of homers and drove home five runs as Ephrata doubled up Moses Lake 10-5. Bert Blyleven had two hits and two RBI, pitched seven solid innings, and left the game with an 11-2 lead. The bullpen made it interesting but Bainbridge Island held on to beat Tumwater 11-7. Mike Schmidt hit a three-run homer during a four-run third as Snoqualmie topped Renton 7-2.

April 23
 
Jesse Orosco walked Ron Fairly with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 11th to give Forks a 3-2 win over Ocean Shores. Rickey Henderson scored three runs as Hoquiam beat Jefferson County 5-2. Kazuhisa Inao pitched a three-hitter as Quincy topped Roger Clemens and Cashmere 2-0. Del Ennis hit a pinch homer in the bottom of the 12th to give Ephrata a 6-5 win over Moses Lake. Ryan Zimmerman homered and knocked in three runs in Yakima's 6-5 win over Goldendale. Chuck Klein had a three-run homer and Clayton Kershaw and Jim Konstanty combined on a five-hitter as Kelso blanked Pasco 5-0. Jim Thome and Luis Tiant, Jr. hit three-run homers during Tumwater's seven-run first and the T's romped to an 8-5 win over Bainbridge Island. Curt Schilling pitched eight strong innings as Snoqualmie thumped Renton 8-1.

April 24

Babe Adams outdueled Dutch Leonard and Aberdeen edged Long Beach 2-1. Tim Hudson pitched a five-hitter and Todd Helton drove in both runs in Hoquiam's 2-0 win over Jefferson County. Dave Nilsson hit a two-run shot in the top of the 13th for the only runs of the game as North Bend blanked Davenport 2-0. Joey Votto had a homer, double, and three RBI to lead Vancouver past Wenatchee 6-3. Jerry Koosman and three relievers held Pasco to six hits and Chuck Klein drove in all four Kelso runs in a 4-1 win.

Injuries

David Wells of Wenatchee was injured during an April 19 game at Wenatchee and will be sidelined for a couple of weeks. Bob Welch was called up to take Wells' spot in the rotation. Billy O'Dell had to leave an April 19 game with a sore elbow and will be out for about ten days. John "Blue Moon" Odom will fill his spot on the Ocean Shores roster. Palmer's sore shoulder will keep him out of the Pasco rotation for about three weeks. Camilo Pascual was called up to take his roster spot. Curt Davis left an April 23 game with a sore shoulder and will be out for about three weeks.
