Feller flirts with no-no on A to Z League opening day

Bob Feller
Occasionally art, or at least a statistical computer baseball replay, nearly imitates life. Bob Feller of Cleveland pitched the only opening-day no-hitter in major league baseball history back in 1940. On opening day for the A to Z League Feller just missed duplicating the feat; his no-no was broken up with one out in the top of the ninth when Aberdeen's Roberto Alomar grounded a single to right field. Feller was named player of the week in recognition of the feat.

April 5

Feller walked two and struck out six, using just 71 pitches in his one-hit shutout as Forks bested the A's 4-0. George Foster hit a three-run homer to cap the F's four-run fourth. Mark Langston and three others out-dueled Randy Johnson as Long Beach topped Jefferson County 4-2. Joe DiMaggio's second homer of the opening day game was a grand slam against Aroldis Chapman in the bottom of the ninth as Davenport stunned Cashmere 8-5. Rod Carew had four hits, including a homer, for the C's. Bullet Joe Rogan pitched a three-hitter and Cal Ripken, Jr. knocked in four runs as Renton romped over Ephrata 10-4. Harmon Killebrew's homer in the top of the eighth snapped a 5-all tie and Yakima held on to beat Ephrata 6-5.
