Gibson's teammate Charlie Gehringer was also in the running for the award for batting .556 (11-for-18). Gaylord Perry of Pasco won both of his starts for the week and allowed just seven hits, improving his season record to 6-1 and his ERA to 2.88.

May 17: Moises Alou ripped a two-run triple in the top of the seventh, and Aberdeen made it stand up in a 2-1 win at Moses Lake. Bainbridge Island piled up 19 hits in a 13-7 rout of Pasco; Craig Biggio, Carlos Beltran, Yogi Berra, and Bobby Bonds each had three hits. Dolf Luque pitched a six-hitter and Long Beach blanked Davenport 1-0. Yunel Escobar drilled a pinch-hit grand slam in the bottom of the seventh and Ephrata went on to beat Ocean Shores 5-2. Jimmie Foxx and Bill Freehan hit home runs and Forks outscored Quincy 9-4. Goldendale hit four homers in a 12-5 rout of Tumwater. Vladimir Guerrero led the way with four RBI and Gibson scored four runs and drove in three. Rogers Hornsby hit a grand slam during Hoquiam's six-run eighth and the H's topped Kelso 10-6. Ivan Rodriguez drove home four runs and Tim Raines knocked in three as Renton drubbed Yakima 15-8. Ted Williams stretched his hitting streak to nine games with a pair of singles; he drove in one run in Wenatchee's 5-4 win at Snoqualmie.
May 18: On the anniversary of the Mt. St. Helens blast Moses Lake erupted for 17 hits in a 17-4 rout of Aberdeen. Christy Matthewson pitched a complete game, had two hits, and scored and drove in three runs. Perry pitched a complete game and Dave Parker drove in three runs as Pasco topped Bainbridge Island 8-2. David Cone scattered nine hits and Ty Cobb and Miguel Cabrera both had three hits as Cashmere defeated Jefferson County 6-2. Tony Lazzeri hit a two-run homer in the top of the ninth and Long Beach held on to beat Davenport 3-2. Dwight Evans hit a grand slam in the bottom of the sixth and Ephrata beat Ocean Shores 4-2. Kazuhisa Inao pitched a two-hitter and Quincy blanked Forks 5-0. Harmon Killebrew hit a three-run homer in the first and an RBI double in the third, leading Kelso to a 6-4 win over Hoquiam. Vancouver scored three in the top of the ninth, taking the lead on a bases-loaded single by Shane Victorino, and Vancouver topped North Bend 9-7. Babe Ruth gave Renton the lead with a three-run homer in the third and they held on to best Yakima 6-3. Williams's hitting streak was snapped, but Honus Wagner and Bernie Williams had three safeties each and Wenatchee rolled over Snoqualmie 7-1.
May 19: Henry Aaron snapped a tie with a three-run homer in the top of the ninth and Aberdeen won at Moses Lake 9-6. Martin Dihigo pitched a three-hitter, outdueling Bob Lemon as Davenport edged Long Beach 1-0. Ocean Shores scored eight in the top of the seventh to take the lead, but Ephrata scored two in the eighth to tie and plated the winning run on Darrell Evans's sacrifice fly in the ninth, winning a wild one 10-9. Brandon Inge hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth and Quincy topped Forks 7-5.
May 20: Jeff Kent had two homers and five RBI and Corey Kluber pitched a six-hitter and fanned 11 as Kelso blanked Bainbridge Island 7-0. Cashmere rapped 16 hits, led by three each from Roy Campanella and Roberto Clemente, in a 12-4 romp over Hoquiam. Forks scored four in the first and two more in the second and held on for a 7-5 win at Goldendale. Bullet Joe Rogan allowed just two hits over seven innings and Renton topped Vancouver 4-1. Jim Thome snapped a 1-all tie with a two-run homer in the sixth and Tumwater won at Wenatchee 4-1.
May 21: Four Quincy pitchers combined on a three-hitter in a 3-0 shutout of Aberdeen. Jim Bunning scattered seven hits and Bainbridge Island beat Kelso 6-1. Jose Cruz Sr. clubbed a leadoff, pinch-hit homer to snap a tie in the top of the ninth, and Cashmere went on to win at Hoquiam 6-4. Walter Johnson didn't pitch particularly well, allowing four earned runs in eight innings, but his three-run homer in the sixth was the key hit in Jefferson County's 5-4 win over Davenport. Buck Leonard and Ray Lankford homered in Long Beach's 7-3 victory over Ephrata. Willie Foster pitched a seven-hitter and Forks romped at Goldendale 10-2. Greg Maddux pitched a seven-hitter and Joe Medwick clubbed a three-run homer in the third as Moses Lake won at Ocean Shores 5-1. Cal Ripken, Jr. went deep twice and Ruth also homered in Renton's 6-4 win over Vancouver. Ted Williams, Matt Williams, and Bob Watson homered in Wenatchee's 9-6 win over Tumwater.
May 22: Hisashi Iwakuma allowed just one run on two hits in eight innings in his return from the injured list; Quincy scored five in the top of the 12th and beat Aberdeen 6-3. Bobby and Barry Bonds each hit solo homers off Clayton Kershaw and Bainbridge Island and Harry Brecheen beat Kelso 2-1. Don Drysdale pitched a five-hitter and fanned 10 as Davenport topped Jefferson County 6-1. Luque allowed just one hit, an Escobar double in the fifth, and Long Beach bested Ephrata 5-1. Tony Gwynn had four hits as Goldendale piled up 18 in a 9-6 win over Forks. Joe Morgan drove in five runs with a grand slam and a sacrifice fly as Moses Lake thumped Ocean Shores 9-3. Graig Nettles hit a three-run homer in the top of the ninth, but North Bend's comeback fell short in a 5-4 loss at Pasco. Sam Rice slugged a pinch-hit, two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth as Renton beat Vancouver 5-4. Greg Zaun hit a three-run homer to snap a tie in the bottom of the seventh and Yakima beat Snoqualmie 4-2. Ted Williams and Matt Wieters both had three RBI in Wenatchee's 7-6 win over Tumwater. Thome hit a grand slam for the T's.
May 23: John Antonelli pitched seven solid innings and Aberdeen topped Quincy 5-1. Lou Boudreau drove in a pair of runs and Bert Blyleven scattered nine hits over eight innings as Bainbridge Island bested Kelso 4-3. Toby Harrah hit a three-run homer and Carl Hubbell and Roberto Hernandez combined on a four-hitter as Hoquiam beat Cashmere 4-1. Joe DiMaggio hit a two-run triple in the top of the tenth and Davenport won at Jefferson County 6-4. Ephrata scored two in the top of the 14th but Long Beach came back with three in the bottom of the frame to win 10-9. Leonard went 4-for-7 with two homers and a double and five RBI for the winners. Ken Griffey, Jr., Josh Gibson, and Lou Gehrig homered to lead Goldendale to a 6-5 win over Forks. Matthewson and Mike Mussina combined on a three-hitter and Moses Lake blanked Ocean Shores 8-0. Perry pitched a two-hitter and fanned eight and Albert Pujols homered as Pasco beat North Bend 2-0.
Injuries
Ephrata hurler Yutaka Enatsu strained his forearm on his last pitch of the sixth inning May 17 and was placed on the injured list. Pat Zachary of Yakima left a May 18 game with a sore shoulder and was placed on the injured list for the second time in the young season. Raines twisted an ankle trying to beat out a grounder May 22 and will be out for a week or two. David Justice bruised his knee sliding into second on a double May 22 and will miss a couple of weeks.
