Injuries

Bell
Bainbridge Island's Cool Papa Bell broke a bone in his hand when hit by a pitch in an April 11 game and is expected to miss about five weeks. BI player-manager Lou Boudreau called up Willard Brown and said Brown and Carlos Beltran would split center field duties in Bell's absence.

Long Beach's starting rotation took a hit when both Bob Lemon and Dutch Leonard suffered minor injuries in their first starts of the season. Both will be out for a couple of weeks. Mickey Lolich and Ted Lyons were called up to take their spots in the rotation.

Other starting pitchers went down in the season's first week. Roy Oswalt of Ocean Shores, Raisel Iglesias of Quincy, Kevin Appier of Aberdeen, Tommy John of Jefferson County, Sandy Koufax of Kelso, and Luis Tiant, Jr. of Tumwater will all be out two to three weeks.
