Cashmere, Yakima boast best records after two weeks of A to Z League play

After two weeks of play in the A to Z League Cashmere and Yakima boast the best records in the loop at 9-3. Aberdeen is right behind at 8-3 going into the third week of play.

Mickey Mantle of Moses Lake had a torrid week at the plate. The Commerce Comet hit .542 (13-for-24) and slugged six home runs and drove in eleven.

 Highlights from week 2:

April 12: Hank Aaron and Joe Adcock homered to lead Aberdeen to a 6-5 win over Hoquiam. Steve Carlton pitched seven strong innings and hit a two-run homer as Cashmere topped Ephrata 3-1. It was Upton day at Davenport as BJ and Justin combined for six hits, five runs, six RBI, and three home runs as Quincy topped the D's 8-6. Fred Lynn hit a pair of homers and knocked in four as the L's beat Forks 9-4. Ken Griffey, Jr. had four hits to help Goldendale to a 9-2 win over Vancouver. The Johnsons ruled Ocean Shores as Randy pitched a four-hitter and Bob and Charles homered as the Jays beat the O's 4-0.

April 13: Jose Uribe had a homer, a double, and five RBI to lead Quincy in a 12-1 rout of Davenport. Frank Viola pitched a five-hitter as Vancouver blanked Goldendale 3-0. Mantle hit his first three home runs of the season and drove in five to lead Moses Lake to a 7-4 win over Snoqualmie. Robin Yount hit two homers and knocked in three as Yakima topped Pasco 6-1.

April 14: Joe Cronin hit two home runs and a single and drove in five and Stan Coveleski pitched a six-hitter as Cashmere blanked Ephrata 7-0. Greg Vaughn's homer in the top of the ninth snapped a tie and Jose Valverde saved a 2-1 win for Vancouver over Goldendale. John Smoltz outdueled Juan Marichal as Snoqualmie shut out Moses Lake 2-0.

April 15: Dennis Martinez pitched a three-hitter and Moses Lake blanked Cashmere 3-0. Bobby Doerr's two-run homer capped a three-run eighth as Davenport won at Ephrata 6-5. Tony Oliva hit a grand slam as Ocean Shores scored six in the bottom of the fifth on the way to an 8-2 win over Long Beach.

April 16: Bert Blyleven spun a three-hitter and Bainbridge Island blanked Snoqualmie 5-0. Ty Cobb slugged a grand slam to cap a five-run rally in the top of the ninth and Cashmere beat Moses Lake 9-4. Roy Halladay became the league's first three-game winner as he fired a six-hit shutout in Hoquiam's 8-0 win over Forks. Gabby Hartnett hit a pair of homers and drove in five to back his battery mate. Mickey Lolich pitched a four-hitter and Long Beach blanked Ocean Shores 4-0. Babe Ruth hit a pair of solo homers, stretching his season total to five, but Renton lost to North Bend 5-4. Matt Wieters hit a three-run homer in the top of the ninth as Wenatchee won at Pasco 5-3. Frank Tanana and Bobby Thigpen combined on a four-hit shutout as Tumwater topped Quincy 2-0.

April 17: Wally Joyner had a double, homer, and five RBI as Jefferson County routed Aberdeen 10-2. Gary Sheffield had a home run and a double, scored five runs and knocked in four in Snoqualmie's 13-2 romp over Bainbridge Island. Miguel Cabrera drove in four runs to lead Cashmere to a 6-4 victory at Moses Lake. Steve Yeager's three-run homer capped a five run first for Yakima and the Z's held on to beat Vancouver 7-5.

April 18: Doyle Alexander pitched a four-hitter as Aberdeen thumped Jefferson County 8-1. Cashmere scored eight in the eighth for a comeback 10-7 win at Moses Lake. Hank Greenberg hit a grand slam in the top of the first and Goldendale led all the way in an 8-4 win at Kelso. David Ortiz hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth to give Ocean Shores a 4-3 win over Long Beach. Ruth hit a pair of home runs, including a three-run shot that capped a six-run rally in the bottom of the ninth as Renton stunned North Bend 9-7. Ted Williams and Matt Williams hit three-run homers to power Wenatchee to a 7-4 win at Pasco.

Injuries
Pat Zachry of Yakima left an April 12 game with a sore shoulder and is expected to miss three weeks. Masato Yoshii was called up to take his place in the rotation.

Jeff Brantley left an April 17 game at Snoqualmie with a sore elbow and will be out for about three weeks. Bainbridge Island promoted Steve Bedrosian to take Brantley's spot in the bullpen.
