A to Z League opening, part two

The A to Z League openers continued for another day on April 6. The results:

Bainbridge Island 9, North Bend 1
Bert Blyleven scattered five hits and issued no walks in a complete-game win. Barry Bonds hit two home runs and drove in three for the Bees. Hal Newhouser fanned nine over 6.1 but walked four and allowed six hits while giving up five runs, three of them earned.

Renton 5, Ephrata 4
Renton scored three in the bottom of the seventh on a single, a balk, and an error to come from behind for the win. Pudge Rodriguez had three hits and scored two runs for the R's.

Goldendale 5, Wenatchee 3
Bob Gibson scattered five hits over eight innings of work, and Goose Gossage closed down the victory for the G's, who got home runs from Lou Gehrig and Gary Gaetti. David Wright had a homer, a double, and scored twice for the W's.

Jefferson County 10, Long Beach 0
Walter Johnson scattered eight hits and walked just one while fanning five in a complete-game victory. David Justice led a 15-hit JC attack with three hits, including a pair of home runs. Chipper Jones and Dave Johnson also went deep for the Jays.

Kelso 9, Yakima 0
Sandy Koufax hurled a two-hitter and fanned 14 in a shutout victory over the Z's. George Kell, Harmon Killebrew, and Jeff Kent all went yard for the K's.

Tumwater 3, Snoqualmie 2
The T's broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the eighth when Alan Trammell followed a walk to Gene Tenace with a triple. Tom Seaver took a tough loss. He allowed just four hits, but two were homers by Danny Tartabull and Joe Torre.
