Goldendale tops Moses Lake 3-1, advances to finals with 4-2 series win

MOSES LAKE, WA (GPS)--Tom Glavine came out on top against Pedro Martinez in a fine pitchers duel, Charlie Gehringer got the big hit in the eighth, and Goldendale beat Moses Lake 3-1 October 19 at Larson Field, winning their playoff series four games to two and advancing to the A to Z League championship series against Bainbridge Island.

Tom Glavine got the series-
clinching win as Goldendale
beat Moses Lake 3-1 to advance
to the championship series.
Neither club got much going in the first three innings. Goldendale's Gary Gaetti got the first hit off Martinez--who had pitched a no-hitter in game two of the series--a double in the second. Mickey Mantle hit a leadoff double in the second against Glavine but was not able to advance.

Each team broke through in the fourth. Josh Gibson clubbed a two-out homer deep down the left field line against Pedro to make it 1-0 Goldendale. Willie Mays answered with a leadoff bomb to left against Glavine to tie it at 1-all.

It stayed that way for a while. Goldendale got just one hit and a walk against Martinez in the next three innings. Moses Lake got something going in the sixth when Paul Molitor and Mays opened the inning with back-to-back singles. Stan Musial hit a slow roller toward short that Nomar Garciaparra had to charge. His only play was at first, and the runners moved to second and third with one out. Mantle came to the plate and, with the Goldendale infield playing in, hit a grounder toward second. Molitor took off for the plate for a shot at the lead, Gehringer snagged the ball and fired home in time for the out. Edgar Martinez hit a comebacker to the mound and Glavine threw him out at first to end the threat.

Charlie Gehringer made a
key defensive play and got
the tiebreaking hit in
Goldendale's series-clinching
win.
Martinez allowed just three hits and a walk in the first seven innings, but Goldendale got to him in the eighth. With one out Hank Greenberg, batting for Glavine, laced one into the left field corner for a double. Gehringer lined one into the gap in left center for another two-bagger, plating Greenberg. Martinez got out of the inning with no further damage, but Goldendale had the lead 2-1.

Tom Gordon came on to pitch for Goldendale in the eighth, and Joe Morgan, batting for Pedro, led off with a walk on a 3-1 pitch. Moses Lake manager Connie Mack then called on Eddie Mathews to pinch hit for Molitor, who was 2-for-3 in the game. Goldendale skipper Clark Griffith countered with Everyday Eddie Guardado, who got Mathews to hit a routine fly ball to right. Mays then grounded into a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning. Mays hit into two twin-killings in the contest.

The G's got an insurance run in the top of the ninth. Lou Gehrig led off with a single, moved to third on a couple of groundouts, and scored on a base hit by Troy Glaus to make it 3-1.

It was a run they didn't need. Goldendale closer Goose Gossage came in and made quick work of the M's, striking out Musial and Mantle, and getting pinch hitter Eddie Murray on a routine fly to right to seal the victory and the series, four games to two. Goldendale advances to play Bainbridge Island in the A to Z League championship series. Griffith has penciled in Bob Gibson as his starter for the series opener, which will be played at Bainbridge Island.
