Bainbridge Island routs Aberdeen 10-1, advances to championship series

BAINBRDIGE ISLAND, WA (GPS)--Kevin Brown pitched eight strong innings, guys named Bonds hit three home runs, and Bainbridge Island romped to a 10-1 win over Aberdeen October 19, winning their A to Z League playoff series four games to two and advancing to the championship round. The Bees scored at least one run in every inning from the second to the seventh and at least one run against  each of four A's pitchers.

Bobby Bonds had two
home runs and a double
in Bainbridge Island's
series-clinching 10-1 win
over Aberdeen.
BI got on the board in the second inning when Bobby Bonds hit a two-out solo homer off Aberdeen starter Kevin Appier for a 1-0 lead. Appier retired Ernie Banks on a grounder to short to end the inning. However he twisted his ankle while scrambling off the mound to try to field the ball and had to leave the game. Aberdeen manager Sparky Anderson called on Neil Allen to pitch the third.

It was a pivotal moment in the game. Allen retired the first two batters he faced, striking out Brown and and getting Craig Biggio on a comebacker to the mound. Cool Papa Bell followed with a double to deep center over the head of Earl Averill. Barry Bonds came to the plate and was walked intentionally. Jeff Bagwell spoiled the strategy, lining a first-pitch single to shallow right; Bell scored easily, and Bonds came in when Henry Aaron made an errant throw trying to retire him at third. It was 3-0 Bainbridge.

The Bees added another in the fourth, when Bobby Bonds doubled with one out and scored on a two-out base hit by the pitcher Brown.

After getting just a walk and a single off Brown in the first four innings, Aberdeen finally got something going in the top of the fifth. With one out Banks booted Joe Adcock's grounder for an error. Averill drew a walk, and catcher Alan Ashby grounded a single to left, moving everyone up one and loading the bases. Down 4-0 and the pitcher Allen due up, Anderson inexplicably let him bat. Allen popped up to first base for the second out, and Roberto Alomar grounded to short to snuff the rally.

Sticking with Allen seemed an even worse idea in the bottom of the frame. Bell led off with a single, Barry Bonds doubled down the left field line to move Cool Papa to third, and Bagwell knocked a triple to deep right center to score both and make it 6-0. That was finally it for Allen; John Axford was called out of the Aberdeen bullpen. George Brett greeted him with a sacrifice fly to center to make it 7-zip.

Kevin Brown blanked
Aberdeen through eight
and drove in a run as
well for BI.
Barry Bonds hit a two-run homer in the sixth, Bobby Bonds hit his second of the game, a solo shot in the seventh, and Bainbridge Island was up 10-0.

Meanwhile Brown continued to cruise. He'd given up just six hits and a couple of walks through eight innings, and player-manager Lou Boudreau sent him out for the ninth. He gave up singles to Adcock and Averill, then walked catcher Brad Ausmus to load the bases with nobody out. At 123 pitches Brown was out of gas, and Jeff Brantley came on in relief. Pinch hitter Edgardo Alfonso grounded out to second, plating Adcock and moving everyone else up a base. Alomar walked to re-load the bases. But Luke Appling grounded one back to Brantley, who got the force on Averill at the plate, and then Aaron grounded out to second for the final out in Bainbridge Island's 10-1 win.

Boudreau said he'd be going with Bert Blyleven to start game one of the championship series, though Blyleven had a couple of shaky outings in this first-round series. Jim Bunning is penciled in to pitch game two for Bainbridge Island. As of this writing Goldendale leads Moses Lake three games to two in the other first-round series.
