Snider slugs way to player of the week honors

Duke Snider of Snoqualmie has been named A to Z League player of the week for the week ending July 24. Snider hit .565 for the week (13-for-23) including a double, a triple, and four home runs. He scored eight runs, drove in nine, and had a filthy OPS of 1.833 for the week. There was lots of slugging going on during the week. Other contenders for POTW included Bill Nicholson, who hit .393, cracked four homers, and drove in 13 runs; Mike Schmidt, who slugged five homers and drove in eight runs; Joe DiMaggio who, though he only hit .226 made them count as he hit two homers, a triple, and a double and drove in 10 runs; and Cool Papa Bell, who hit a cool .579 (11-for-19), scored six runs and drove home four.

Some highlights for the week:

July 18

Babe Adams allowed just one earned run in eight innings of work and Aberdeen topped Forks 4-2. Hoquiam scored four runs on six hits in the fourth inning and held on to beat Ocean Shores 5-2. Dutch Leonard pitched a solid eight innings and Long Beach beat Jefferson County and Randy Johnson 4-1. Davenport chased Steve Carlton with five runs on five hits and a walk in the top of the first and led all the way in a 7-5 win over Cashmere. Nolan Ryan allowed just one run on four hits and fanned seven in seven innings as Renton bested Ephrata 5-1. Eddie Murray's pinch-hit, two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh gave Moses Lake the lead, and Stan Musial and Joe Morgan also homered as the M's topped Quincy 5-3. Troy Glaus's three-run double capped a five-run eighth and Goldendale beat Wenatchee 7-3. Jeff Kent and Harmon Killebrew homered during Kelso's 4-3 win over Yakima. Satchel Paige pitched a solid eight and Pasco edged Vancouver 3-2. Wade Boggs drew a walk with the bases loaded in the bottom of the tenth to give Bainbridge Island a 6-5 win over North Bend. Gary Sheffield homered and Ozzie Smith drove in three runs as Snoqualmie beat Tumwater 8-3.

July 19

George Foster singled to plate Frankie Frisch with a run in the top of the tenth and Forks beat Aberdeen 3-2. A sextet of hurlers held Hoquiam to four hits and Mel Ott and Sadaharu Oh homered as Ocean Shores beat the H's 4-2. Derek Jeter scored the winning run on a fielder's choice with the sacks full in the bottom of the ninth and Jefferson County beat Long Beach 3-2. Eddie Collins hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth and Cashmere beat Davenport 8-7. Steve Rogers pitched a four-hitter and Cal Ripken, Jr. hit a three-run homer as Renton blanked Ephrata 3-0. Ken Griffey, Jr. hit a grand slam in the third and Tom Glavine scattered 11 hits in a complete game as Goldendale rolled past Wenatchee 7-3. Dmitri Young homered in the top of the tenth to snap a tie and Yakima beat Kelso 4-3. Buster Posey, who had five RBI for the game, singled with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 16th to give Pasco a 10-9 win over Vancouver. Nicholson's three-run homer in the top of the eighth iced North Bend's 5-2 win at Bainbridge Island. Ryne Sandberg had a homer and four RBI and Schmidt and Snider also went deep as Snoqualmie pounded Tumwater 10-5.

July 20

Kevin Appier allowed just three hits over eight innings, Richie Ashburn had four hits and scored three runs, and Hank Aaron had three hits, a homer, and five RBI as Aberdeen blasted Forks 8-1. Rogers Hornsby and Torii Hunter homered behind Felix Hernandez and Hoquiam edged Ocean Shores 3-2. Jefferson County scored three in the bottom of the first with the help of an error and a wild pitch, and Larry Jackson and two relievers combined on a five-hitter as the Jays beat Long Beach 3-1. Ray Dandridge led the hit parade with four and Andre Dawson and Carlos Delgado homered in Davenport's 10-3 rout of Cashmere. Renton hit five solo homers, including two by Babe Ruth, but it was a single by Tim Raines that plated Sam Rice with the go-ahead run in the top of the eleventh as the R's beat Ephrata 6-5. Quincy scored five in the top of the ninth on five singles, a walk, a hit batsman, and a passed ball and beat Moses Lake 8-5. Hank Greenberg drove in all three Goldendale runs; his two-run homer in the seventh snapped a tie and the G's held on to beat Wenatchee 3-1. Yaz had a homer and three RBI and Ryan Zimmerman hit a two-run shot to lead Yakima to a 9-6 win at Kelso. John Valentin homered to lead off the top of the eleventh and Vancouver won at Pasco 3-2. Jeff Nelson walked Jeff Bagwell and Bobby Bonds to open the bottom of the 12th, then uncorked two wild pitches, allowing Bagwell to score the winning run as Bainbridge Island edged North Bend 6-5. Tumwater scored three in the top of the ninth against Lee Smith to tie the game, but Ron Santo slugged a grand slam off Matt Thornton in the bottom of the frame as Snoqualmie beat Tumwater 8-4 and got a win for the late, great Bruce Sutter.

July 21

Jimmie Foxx hit a pair of homers and drove in three runs, and Frisch also had three RBI on a double and a triple and Forks outscored Aberdeen 10-6. Ocean Shores tied the game with six in the top of the eighth, a rally capped by Lefty O'Doul's pinch-hit grand slam, then Al Oliver lifted a sacrifice fly in the ninth to give the O's a 9-8 win over Hoquiam. Bob Lemon pitched seven strong innings, and Tony Lazzeri hit a two-run homer in the seventh as Long Beach topped Jefferson County 3-1. Ty Cobb had four hits and Collins had three, setting the table for Cashmere's 8-5 win over Davenport. Darrell Evans had three hits and four RBI; his three-run homer in the sixth broke a 1-all tie and Ephrata went on to a 7-1 win over Renton. Greg Maddux pitched a four-hitter and drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and Moses Lake topped Quincy 3-1. Lou Gehrig hit his 33rd homer and drove in three runs, leading Goldendale in an 11-5 rout of Wenatchee. Killebrew singled home Chuck Klein in the bottom of the tenth to give Kelso a 5-4 win over Yakima. Mo Vaughn hit a pair of homers and Vancouver topped Pasco 5-3. George Brett went 3-for-4 with a pair of homers and four RBI and Bainbridge Island straightened out North Bend 6-4. Willie Stargell hit a two-run double to cap a three-run rally in the eighth and Snoqualmie bested Tumwater 5-3.

July 22

Dolf Luque allowed just one run over 8 2/3 innings, getting last-out relief help from Sparky Lyle as Long Beach edged Forks 2-1. Fergie Jenkins hit a grand slam in the second inning and pitched a complete game, allowing 11 hits but just one run, as Jefferson County thumped Ocean Shores 7-1. Roger Clemens pitched a five-hitter and struck out nine, and Roberto Clemente and Oscar Charleston homered as Cashmere blanked Ephrata 3-0. Chase Utley capped a three-run rally in the bottom of the ninth by hitting a two-run homer off Edwin Diaz and Quincy came from behind to beat Davenport 8-7. Moses Lake scored four in the top of the 18th, three of them on triples by Eddie Mathews and Joe Medwick, and Moses Lake outlasted Snoqualmie 11-7. Chuck Klein gave Kelso the lead with a pinch-hit grand slam in the bottom of the seventh, but Wenatchee answered with three in the top of the eighth on five singles, none of them hit very hard, and the W's took it 6-5. The Vaughns won it for Vancouver; Mo led off the bottom of the ninth with a base hit and later scored on a single by Greg and the V's topped Goldendale 3-2. Yakima scored five in the first, getting a three-run homer from Richie Zisk and a two-run shot by Ben Zobrist, and Barry Zito scattered seven hits over eight innings as the Z's beat Pasco 5-1. Renton racked up 16 hits, including three each from Jackie Robinson, Scott Rolen, and Pudge Rodriguez, who had four RBI, and routed Bainbridge Island 10-4. Luis Tiant, Jr. pitched seven solid innings and drove in a run with a double in the fifth and Tumwater bested North Bend 7-2.

July 23

Hoquiam took a lead on Tom Haller's three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh, but Aberdeen answered with three in the top of the eighth, taking the lead on a single by Alan Ashby, and won the game 6-4. Wes Farrell pitched a three-hitter and Foster homered as Forks beat Long Beach 5-1. Randy Johnson fanned 12 in eight innings and Jefferson County pummeled Ocean Shores 9-2. Cashmere hit four home runs, including a three-run pinch shot by Rico Carty in the eighth that sealed their 8-4 win over Ephrata. Bob Watson and Matt Wieters homered during Wenatchee's three-run rally in the sixth, and the W's held on to beat Kelso 5-4. Goldendale scored three in the top of the tenth, two on a double by Josh Gibson, and beat Vancouver 7-4. Paige pitched eight solid innings, and Pasco scored on an RBI triple by Tony Phillips in the top of the ninth and beat Yakima 4-3. Craig Biggio went 3-for-4 and scored three runs; his two-run homer in the top of the ninth gave Bainbridge Island a 9-7 win at Renton. Bill Terry went 4-for-4 and scored three runs, Jim Thome went 3-for-4 and scored four, and Danny Tartabull homered and drove in five as Tumwater spanked North Bend 9-4.

July 24

Dick Allen, Joe Adcock, and Bobby Abreu homered and Doyle Alexander allowed just two hits over seven innings as Aberdeen beaat Hoquiam 6-3. Greg Luzinski tied the game with a two-out homer in the bottom of the ninth, and Long Beach won it in the tenth on an RBI single by Barry Larkin, beating Forks 6-5. Luke Easter hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth and Ephrata beat Cashmere 3-1. Chili Davis hit two solo shots and DiMaggio had a two-run double in Davenport's 5-4 win at Quincy. You wouldn't expect a slugfest when Christy Matthewson and Tom Seaver are the starting pitchers, but that's what happened as the two clubs combined for 28 hits and Moses Lake edged Snoqualmie 9-8. Honus Wagner's RBI double in the top of the eighth snapped a tie and Wenatchee held on to beat Kelso 5-4. Vancouver got a run with the help of two errors in the bottom of the ninth and topped Goldendale 5-4. Ross Youngs led the hit parade with three, including a homer, as Yakima pounded out 14 hits in an 8-3 win over Pasco. Johnny Romano doubled to plate Sam Rice in the bottom of the ninth as Renton topped Bainbridge Island 3-2. Tim Naehring  hit a sacrifice fly in the sixth to put North Bend ahead and the N's held on to win at Tumwater 6-4.

Injuries

Trevor Hoffman left a July 18 game with a sore wrist and is expected to be out for a couple of weeks. Hoquiam called up Jay Howell to fill in while Hoffman is on the shelf. Carl Erskine left his July 19 start with severe athlete's foot and may be out for two weeks or more. Howard Ehmke was called back up to replace Oisk in the rotation for Ephrata. Tim Hudson left his July 22 start with a strained lat and will be out for a couple of weeks. Waite Hoyt was called up to take his spot in the Hoquiam rotation. Tommy Bridges left his start July 22 with a bum knee and may miss several starts. Steve Bedrosian was called up to help bolster the bullpen for Bainbridge Island.
