Some highlights for the week:
July 25
Kevin Appier pitched a five-hit shutout and Allen went 4-for-4 with two home runs, four RBI, and three runs scored as Aberdeen beat up on Hoquiam 10-0. Mark Langston pitched a seven-hitter and drove in two runs with a single and a sacrifice fly to lead Long Beach to a 10-2 win over Forks. Jefferson County scored two in the top of the tenth on an RBI triple by Dave Justice and a sacrifice fly by Andruw Jones and beat Ocean Shores 3-1. Erickson pitched a four-hitter and Darrell Evans drove in three runs as Ephrata blanked Cashmere 6-0. Chili Davis went 3-for-5 with a homer, double, and three RBI and Dizzy Dean pitched seven solid innings as Davenport bopped Quincy 7-2. Snoqualmie scored two in the bottom of the eighth on RBI doubles by Sisler and Snider and came from behind to beat Moses Lake 4-3. Dave Winfield drove in four runs; his three-run homer in the fourth chased Masaichi Kaneda and Wenatchee thumped Kelso 8-3. Charlie Gehringer and Josh Gibson hit home runs and Nomar Garciaparra drove in three runs with a pair of doubles and Goldendale prevailed over Vancouver 6-4. Robin Yount and Ryan Zimmerman hit home runs to lead Yakima to a 6-5 win over Pasco. Craig Biggio, Cool Papa Bell, Jeff Bagwell, and Ernie Banks had three hits each and Bainbridge Island piled up 16 hit in all on the way to a 9-6 win at Renton. Frank Thomas hit two homers and drove in three runs as Tumwater beat North Bend 5-2.
July 26
Henry Aaron hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth to snap a 4-all tie and Aberdeen held on to beat Jefferson County 6-4. Forks got 11 hits, including a homer by Tony Fernandez, in a 10-5 win over Hoquiam. Long Beach scored eight in the bottom of the first and piled up 19 hits on the way to a 14-5 rout of Ocean Shores. Luke Easter and Johnny Edwards both hit three-run homers and Dock Ellis won his eleventh game as Ephrata doubled up on Davenport 12-6. Hisashi Iwakuma pitched a four-hitter and Ichiro hit his first homer of the season as Quincy topped Tumwater 4-1. Early Wynn scattered nine hits and David Wright went 4-for-5 with a double, triple, and four RBI and Wenatchee clobbered Pasco 8-1. Bob Gibson pitched a six-hitter and struck out 10 and Goldendale hit four homers in a 6-3 win over Kelso. Yakima drew seven walks and scored six over the final three innings to beat Vancouver 7-4. Bagwell hit a leadoff homer against Lee Smith in the bottom of the ninth and Bainbridge Island beat Snoqualmie 7-6. Babe Ruth pitched a four-hitter and Renton had 13 hits in a 9-1 thrashing of North Bend.
July 27
Aaron hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the tenth to give Aberdeen its sixth win in a row, a 3-2 decision over Jefferson County. Bob Friend pitched a four-hitter and went 3-for-3 at the plate, Ron Fairly homered, and Forks blanked Hoquiam 3-0. Evan Longoria hit a grand slam during Long Beach's five-run sixth and the L's beat Ocean Shores 8-3. Roberto Clemente singled to plate Oscar Charleston in the bottom of the ninth and Cashmere edged Moses Lake 2-1. Yutaka Enatsu allowed just one run on five hits in 8 2/3 innings, Easter and Edwards homered again, and Ephrata topped Davenport 6-1. Del Unser went 3-for-3 and drove in two runs, and Mike Ivie also knocked in a pair as Quincy beat Tumwater 6-4. Adam Wainwright allowed just four hits over eight innings, and Honus Wagner drove in four runs as Wenatchee beat Pasco 6-2. Clayton Kershaw out-dueled Lefty Grove, pitching eight strong innings and driving in a run in Kelso's 4-2 win at Goldendale. Fernando Valenzuela allowed just one run on three hits in seven innings, and Greg Vaughn drove in three runs with a pair of homers as Vancouver topped Yakima 5-2. Warren Spahn pitched a two-hitter and Snoqualmie blanked Bainbridge Island 2-0. Tim Naehring hit a three-run homer to cap North Bend's six-run rally in the fifth, and the N's held on to beat Renton 8-6.
July 28
Aaron had a homer, scored three runs, and drove in two, and Allen and Moises Alou also chipped in with two ribbies each as Aberdeen handled Jefferson County 8-4. Wes Ferrell pitched a two-hitter, fanned 11, and lost! Carl Hubbell went seven, allowed one run on six hits and struck out 10, and Hoquiam edged Forks 2-1. Ocean Shores scored five in the eighth, three on a double by Mel Ott, and beat Long Beach 8-4. Miguel Cabrera drove in four runs with a homer and a double to lead Cashmere to an 8-5 win over Moses Lake. Satchel Paige pitched a six-hitter and Mike Piazza drove in three runs with a homer and two doubles as Pasco won at Wenatchee 6-2. Lefty Gomez tossed a three-hitter and Goldendale got homers from Lou Gehrig, Vlad Guerrero, and Josh Gibson to beat Kelso 6-2. The winning run reached on an error and scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the 14th as Vancouver beat Yakima 8-7. Jim Bottomley hit a pinch single in the bottom of the 11th to plate Bobby Bonds as Bainbridge Island won a see-saw battle with Snoqualmie, 9-8. Nolan Ryan pitched a two-hitter and Edd Roush singled in the third to score Jackie Robinson with the game's only run as Renton blanked North Bend 1-0.
July 29
Jimmie Foxx hit a home run, a double, and had four RBI to lead Forks to a 5-3 win over Hoquiam. Long Beach took the lead on an unearned run in the bottom of the eighth and held on to beat Ocean Shores 5-4. Rod Carew hit two homers and drove in four runs as Cashmere outscored Moses Lake 8-6. Easter drove in three runs with a leadoff homer in the second and a two-run single in the third and Ephrata led all the way in a 4-2 win at Davenport. Thomas went 3-for-5 with a pair of homers and three RBI, and Jim Thome also went deep as Tumwater topped Quincy 7-6. Lou Whitaker hit a grand slam in the bottom of the first as Wenatchee plated five unearned runs in the frame and coasted to a 5-1 win over Pasco. Goldendale tied the game on Gehrig's two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth, then beat Kelso 7-6 on a leadoff blast by Hank Greenberg in the tenth. Bob Veale took a no-hitter into the sixth and Joey Votto went 3-for-4 with a homer as Vancouver bested Yakima 7-4. Barry Bonds homered leading off the bottom of the eleventh and Bainbridge Island beat Snoqualmie 5-4. Renton scored four in the top of the eleventh on a two-run double by Pete Rose and a two-run single by Jimmy Rollins and the R's beat North Bend 6-2.
July 30
Ray Lankford and Ernie Lombardi hit two-run homers as Long Beach scored four in the bottom of the eighth to beat Aberdeen 7-6. Ocean Shores scored two in the bottom of the ninth to beat Forks 4-3, with the game-winner scoring when Rollie Fingers hit Al Oliver with a pitch with the bases loaded and two outs. Home Run Johnson went 4-for-5 and scored the winning run in the bottom of the tenth on a single by Sam Jethroe as Jefferson County topped Hoquiam 5-4. Bartolo Colon pitched seven strong innings and Clemente went 3-for-5 with a homer, two runs, and two RBI and Cashmere won at Quincy 6-2. Larry Doby hit a two-run pinch homer in the top of the ninth and Davenport beat North Bend 6-4. Erickson allowed just three hits over seven innings and Mark Ellis homered as Ephrata beat Moses Lake 3-1. Larry Walker, Ted Williams, and Whitaker homered during Wenatchee's 7-5 win at Vancouver. Griffey hit a pair of homers and drove in four runs, and Ron Guidry scattered seven hits as Goldendale thumped Yakima 9-2. Spotswood Poles drew a walk with two out in the bottom of the tenth and scored on Kirby Puckett's double as Pasco beat Kelso 3-2. Johnny Bench hit a grand slam in the top of the first, but Bainbridge Island didn't do much after that, while Thome, Danny Tartabull, and Joe Torre went deep helping Tumwater to an 8-5 win. Mike Schmidt and Willie Stargell had three hits each, and Sisler had a homer and three RBI as Snoqualmie out-scored Renton 10-6.
July 31
Derrek Lee hit a two-run homer to cap a four-run rally in the bottom of the eighth and Long Beach came from behind to beat Aberdeen 4-3. Whitey Ford and Claude Osteen had a fine pitching duel; the game's only run scored on an error by Franie Frisch in the bottom of the eighth and Ocean Shores beat Forks 1-0. Wally Joyner hit a double to score Joe Judge in the bottom of the ninth and Jefferson County beat Hoquiam 5-4. Charleston went 3-for-4 with a home run, a triple, and three RBI and Cashmere won at Quincy 4-2. Hal Newhouser allowed just one run on two hits over seven innings and Trot Nixon hit a two-run homer in the fifth as North Bend beat Davenport 2-1. Two-run doubles by Edgar Martinez and Joe Morgan highlighted Moses Lake's six-run seventh, and the M's topped Ephrata 8-3. Wenatchee racked up 17 hits and scored eight in the eighth on the way to a 14-8 win over Vancouver. Bob Gibson pitched a five-hitter and Garciaparra homered in the fifth as Goldendale edged Yakima 1-0. Sandy Koufax pitched a six-hitter and Jumbo Kimbro went 3-for-4 with a homer and three RBI and Kelso thumped Pasco 7-2. Thome and Mike Trout homered and Tumwater beat Bainbridge Island 3-1. Roush hit a three-run homer to cap a four-run rally in the eighth and Renton beat Snoqualmie 5-4.
Injuries
Alejandro Pena left his relief appearance July 26 because of a stubbed toe and will be out for about a week. Joe Page was called up to fill Pena's spot in the Pasco bullpen. Don Newcombe left his start July 27 with a blister on his ankle. He'll miss several starts, and Mike Norris was called up to join the North Bend rotation.
