Tony O is A to Z League player of the week

Tony Oliva of Ocean Shores was named A to Z League player of the week for the week ending June 12. Oliva batted .500 (12-for-24) and hit three home runs, scored eight runs and drove in six. Other contenders for the award included Joe DiMaggio, who hit five homers and drove in ten runs; Josh Gibson, who had 12 RBI, including seven on Sunday; and Lou Gehrig, who hit .444 and had seven runs scored and six RBI.

Some highlights for the week:

June 6

Whitey Ford pitched seven solid innings and Forks beat Pasco 5-2. Torii Hunter homered and drove in four runs as Carl Hubbell and Hoquiam topped Vancouver 6-2. Walter Johnson scattered nine hits and Dave Justice and Charles Johnson homered as Jefferson County thumped Yakima 6-1. Bert Blyleven pitched a seven-hitter and George Brett hit a three-run homer as Bainbridge Island blanked Long Beach 5-0. Ken Oberkfell swatted a single with the bases loaded in the top of the eleventh giving Ocean Shores the lead in an 8-6 win over North Bend. Ivan Rodriguez had three hits to lead a 14-hit attack as Renton ripped Cashmere 10-2. Mike Schmidt and Louis Santop hit solo homers in the bottom of the eighth and Snoqualmie bested Davenport 4-3. Jim Thome and Joe Torre hit homers during Tumwater's 5-4 win over Ephrata. Ted Williams drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the ninth to give Wenatchee a 6-5 victory over Moses Lake. Lefty Gomez pitched a six-hitter and Josh Gibson and Ken Griffey, Jr. hit homers in Goldendale's 8-3 win over Quincy.

June 7

Aberdeen scored three in the top of the eighth on homers by Hank Aaron and Joe Adcock and went on to edge Kelso 5-4. Toby Harrah went 3-for-5 with a pair of  homers and four RBI to lead Hoquiam in a 7-4 win at Vancouver. Yakima scored three in the bottom of the ninth on homers by Ryan Zimmerman and Dmitri Young and Yakima beat Jefferson County 4-3. Hideo Nomo pitched a three-hitter and North Bend racked up 14 hits in a 9-1 win over Ocean Shores. Pudge Rodriguez singled with the sacks full in the bottom of the 12th and Renton edged Cashmere 3-2. Dwight Evans hit a two-run homer in the top of the eleventh and Ephrata held on to win at Tumwater 6-5. Larry Walker and Ernie Whitt each drove in four runs as Wenatchee outslugged Moses Lake 13-10. Lefty Grove pitched eight solid innings and Goldendale topped Quincy 5-1.

June 8

Chief Bender pitched a six-hitter and Bainbridge Island racked up 14 hits in a 10-1 romp over Long Beach. Oscar Charleston broke a tie with a home run off Dave Righetti in the top of the tenth and Cashmere edged Renton 3-2. Willie Stargell clubbed a leadoff homer in the bottom of the ninth and Snoqualmie beat Sean Doolittle and Davenport 3-2. With a runner on third and no outs in the bottom of the ninth, Moses Lake intentionally walked two batters to load the bases and face Ted Williams. The strategy didn't work, as the Splendid Splinter lashed a single to give Wenatchee a 5-4 win. Goldendale scored three in the bottom of the eighth and held on to beat Quincy 5-4.

June 9

Four Forks pitchers combined on a four-hitter and the F's edged Vancouver 2-1. Waite Hoyt pitched seven innings without allowing an earned run and Hoquiam topped Yakima 5-1. Vida Blue allowed just five hits over eight innings and Cool Papa Bell had four hits to lead Bainbridge Island to a 7-2 win at Jefferson County. Magglio Ordonez hit a grand slam off Righetti in the bottom of the eighth and Ocean Shores bested Renton 5-1. Gary Sheffield hit a pinch grand slam off Francisco Cordero in the top of the ninth, but Eddie Collins answered with a two-run single off Bruce Sutter in the bottom of the frame and Cashmere snuck past Snoqualmie 6-5. Andre Dawson hit two homers and drove in three runs and DiMaggio hit a pair of solo shots as Davenport outscored Tumwater 8-5.

June 10

Dick Allen hit a three-run homer off Jonathan Papelbon in the bottom of the eighth and Aberdeen beat Pasco 4-2. Joey Votto drove in three runs with a pair of doubles and Andy VanSlyke and Jose Valentin homered as Vancouver bested Forks 5-3. Emil Yde pitched a three-hitter and Yakima piled up a dozen hits in a 10-0 shutout at Hoquiam. Reggie Jackson singled with the sacks full in the bottom of the ninth and Jefferson County edged Bainbridge Island 5-4. Pop Lloyd singled to plate Greg Luzinski with the winning run in the bottom of the ninth as Long Beach nipped North Bend 3-2. Al Oliver had four hits and Oliva knocked three as Ocean Shores pounded Renton 7-2. Cashmere tied the game with three in the bottom of the ninth and then won it in the tenth on Ty Cobb's RBI double, beating Snoqualmie 5-4. Thome went 3-for-4 with a pair of homers and four RBI and John Tudor pitched a seven hitter as Tumwater whipped Davenport 8-2. Early Wynn and Billy Wagner combined on a three-hitter, Lou Whitaker drove in three runs, and David Wright and Bernie Williams knocked in two each as Wenatchee outscored Ephrata 8-2. Moses Lake broke a tie with four in the seventh, three on a home run by Mickey Mantle, and the M's beat Goldendale 8-4.

June 11

Pete Alexander scattered nine hits and improved his record to 7-1 as Aberdeen blanked Pasco 3-0. Hoquiam scored six in the fourth and held on to beat Yakima 7-6. Yogi Berra hit a pair of homers, including a three-run shot in the top of the eleventh that gave Bainbridge Island a 7-4 win over Jefferson County. Schmidt had a single, double, triple, and three RBI to lead Snoqualmie to a 7-4 win at Cashmere. Dock Ellis and Dennis Eckersley teamed up on a two-hitter and Epphrata edged Wenatchee 2-1. Bob Gibson and Eddie Guardado combined on a four-hitter and Goldendale beat Moses Lake 6-1. Chuck Klein hit a three-run homer in the top of the first and Kelso led all the way behind Sandy Koufax, beating Quincy 6-2.

June 12

Rafael Palmeiro hit a pair of homers, his second and third of the season, and Satchel Paige had a solid outing in Pasco's 5-2 win over Aberdeen. Curt Flood and Carl Furillo both drove in a pair of runs and Forks beat Vancouver 5-4. Roy Halladay improved his record to 8-2 as Hoquiam topped Aberdeen 4-3. Jefferson County survived a three-run rally in the top of the ninth and held off Bainbridge Island 5-4. Mike Napoli slugged a three-run homer in the top of the eighth and North Bend survived ninth-inning homers by Kenny Lofton and Buck Leonard to beat Long Beach 5-4. Claude Osteen had a solid outing and Lefty O'Doul drove in a pair of runs as Ocean Shores topped Renton 4-1. Rod Carew drove in three runs, including the game-winner in the bottom of the eleventh as Cashmere topped Snoqualmie 6-5. DiMaggio ripped a three-run homer in the third and Ray Durham did the same in the fourth and Davenport beat Tumwater 6-3. Yutaka Enatsu pitched seven solid innings and drove in a run as Ephrata beat Wenatchee 4-2. Josh Gibson and Gehrig both hit two home runs, Gibson drove in seven and Gehrig's second homer snapped an 11-all tie in the sixth, after which the scoring stopped as Goldendale won a wild one from Moses Lake 12-11. Clayton Kershaw pitched a three-hitter and fanned 13 and Kelso beat Quincy 5-1.

Injuries

Adam Wainwright left his start June 6 with a sore elbow and will be sidelined for about three weeks. Wenatchee called up Smokey Joe Williams to take Waino's spot in the rotation. Jimmy Key left his June 10 start after just one batter; a sore shoulder may keep him out for a month. Roger Clemens left his June 10 start with a sore elbow and will be sidelined for about three weeks.
