Some highlights for the week:
May 30
Satchel Paige allowed just one run on eight hits over eight innings, hit a double, scored a run and drove one in to lead Pasco to a 6-1 win at Hoquiam. Another pitcher helped himself as Tommy John hit a two-run single during Jefferson County's five-run seventh and pitched seven solid innings as the Jays topped Vancouver 9-3. Jim Bunning allowed just four hits and no earned runs in eight innings and Bainbridge Island beat Ocean Shores 4-3. Wilbur Cooper pitched a two-hitter and Miguel Cabrera and Gary Carter homered as Cashmere beat North Bend 2-0. Tumwater scored five in the fifth on home runs by Mike Trout and Jim Thome and beat Moses Lake 6-3.
May 31
Bob Feller flirted with a no-hitter, allowing just a ninth-inning single by Al Kaline, and Forks beat Kelso 4-0. Dick Allen hit a three-run homer in the seventh and Aberdeen topped Goldendale 3-2. Todd Helton and Rogers Hornsby homered off Gaylord Perry while Roy Halladay scattered nine hits as Hoquiam edged Pasco 3-2. Fernando Valenzuela pitched a three-hitter and didn't allow an earned run as Vancouver beat Jefferson County 7-1. Fred Lynn led the way with four hits and Dave Lopes homered as Long Beach out-hit Yakima 9-6. Barry Bonds hit his 20th home run of the season to help Bainbridge Island to a 5-2 win at Ocean Shores. Freddy Norman earned his first victory of the season, allowing just two hits over eight innings, and North Bend scored six runs in the eighth to break it open on the way to a 10-1 romp at Cashmere. Ruth slugged a pair of homers and drove in four runs and Renton bested Davenport 7-2. Tris Speaker's triple plated George Scales with the go-ahead run and Snoqualmie edged Ephrata 5-4. Christy Mathewson came out on top in a pitcher's duel against John Tudor as Moses Lake topped Tumwater 2-1. Carlos Quintana pitched a seven-hitter and Mike Ivie homered as Quincy edged Wenatchee 1-0.
June 1
Bobby Allison hit a three-run homer off Goose Gossage in the bottom of the ninth and Aberdeen beat Goldendale 6-4. Sandy Koufax pitched a five-hitter, fanned 11, and drove in a pair of runs as Kelso won at Forks 6-0. Parker hit a two-run homer in the top of the first and Pasco led all the way in a 3-2 win at Hoquiam. Reggie Jackson had a homer and four RBI and Derek Jeter and Dave Johnson also went deep as Jefferson County out-slugged Vancouver 9-8. Carl Yastrzemski hit a three-run homer in the top of the ninth and Sam Zoldak saved Yakima's 6-5 win at Long Beach. Johnny Bench capped a three-run eleventh-inning rally with a two-run double and Bainbridge Island won at Ocean Shores 4-1. Cashmere out-hit North Bend 14-to-four but had to score three in the bottom of the eighth, two on a double by Cobb, to win 4-3. Renton scored three in the top of the ninth on a homer by Jimmy Rollins and a two-run double by Frank Robinson and won at Davenport 7-4. Jim Edmonds hit a pair of homers, including a two-run shot in the bottom of the sixth that snapped a 2-all tie and Ephrata made it hold up in a 4-2 win over Snoqualmie. Pedro Martinez allowed just one hit over eight innings--a home run by Frank Thomas in the fourth inning--and improved his record to 7-1 as Moses Lake topped Tumwater 6-1. David Wells improved his record to 6-0 and his ERA dropped to 1.79, pitching a four-hit shutout as Wenatchee won at Quincy 4-0.
June 2
Kevin Appier pitched a four-hitter to earn just his second win of the season as Aberdeen blanked Goldendale 7-0. Kelso piled up 17 hits, led by three each from Jeff Kent, Masayuki Kakefu, and Jumbo Kimbro, and routed Forks 10-1. Parker hit a pair of homers and drove in five runs to lead Pasco past Hoquiam 7-2. Fergie Jenkins pitched a five-hitter and Davey Johnson drove in four runs to lead Jefferson County in a 10-1 rout of Vancouver. Ben Zobrist's RBI single in the top of the eleventh gave Yakima a 3-2 win over Long Beach. Rico Carty's pinch, bases-loaded single in the bottom of the eleventh gave Cashmere a 3-2 win over North Bend. Don Drysdale pitched a six-hitter and Andre Dawson, Chili Davis, and Martin Dihigo all homered as Davenport topped Renton 6-1. Edmonds hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the 12th to give Ephrata a 5-3 win over Snoqualmie. Mickey Mantle and Johnny Mize homered to power Moses Lake past Tumwater 6-3. Justin Upton's homer in the bottom of the eighth proved to be the difference in Quincy's 3-2 win over Wenatchee.
June 3
Allison led off the bottom of the ninth with a walk and eventually scored on a base hit by Allen as Aberdeen edged Goldendale 6-5. Curt Flood had a homer and three RBI and Ron Fairly hit a pinch, two-run shot and Forks beat Kelso 8-5. Dutch Leonard went the distance on a six-hitter and Derek Lee, Greg Luzinski, and Javy Lopez all homered in Long Beach's 6-3 win over Yakima. Ruth had a pair of homers and three RBI in Renton's 5-3 win over Davenport. Ron Santo singled in the top of the 11th to plate Al Simmons with what turned out to be the winning run as Snoqualmie topped Ephrata 3-2. Lon Warneke pitched eight solid innings and went 3-for-4 at the plate with a run and two RBI as Wenatchee routed Quincy 12-3.
June 4
Joe Adcock drove in four runs and Bobby Abreu chased in three as Aberdeen blasted Kelso 11-2. Cy Young spun a seven-hitter and Yakima beat Jefferson County 4-1. Robby Thompson went 3-for-4 and drove in three runs and Trout and Joe Torre homered as Tumwater outscored Ephrata 8-5.
June 5
Jimmy Key pitched a four-hitter and Kimbro homered against Babe Adams in the second inning as Kelso beat Aberdeen 1-0. Feller pitched OK and hit a two-run homer as Forks won at Pasco 6-3. Harry Heilmann drove in four runs with a three-run homer and a sacrifice fly as Hoquiam won at Vancouver 7-2. Joel Youngblood drove in three runs and Zobrist knocked in two and Yakima romped over Jefferson County 7-1. Bill Nicholson hit a three-run homer in the third and North Bend topped Ocean Shores 4-2. Bartolo Colon pitched a five-hitter and Cashmere topped Renton 2-0. Willie Mays, Eddie Mathews, and Thurman Munson homered to back Juan Marichal as Moses Lake thumped Wenatchee 8-4. Ken Griffey, Jr. and Lou Gehrig homered in support of Bob Gibson and Goldendale clobbered Quincy 9-2.
Injuries
Greg Olson of Ocean Shores left a May 30 game with a sore elbow and will be out a week or so. Darren Oliver was called up to take Olson's spot in the bullpen. Randy Johnson departed a May 31 start after something snapped. As if to provide maximum contrast, Randy Jones was called up to take the Unit's spot in the Jefferson County rotation. Bret Saberhagen left his June 1 start with a sore shoulder and is expected to be out for about a month. Don Sutton was called up to replace Sabes in the Snoqualmie rotation.
