Goldendale rides four homers to 6-4 win over Moses Lake in playoff opener

MOSES LAKE, WA (GPS)--Goose Goslin slugged a three-run homer against Greg Maddux to give Goldendale a 4-0 lead in the top of the fourth, and the G's held on to beat Moses Lake 6-4 October 12 and take a 1-0 lead in their first-round A to Z League playoff series.

Goose Goslin's three-run
homer in the fourth was
the key hit in Golden-
dale's 6-4 series-opening
win over Moses Lake.
The G's took the lead in the top of the first when Ken Griffey, Jr. tagged Maddux for a two-out homer deep down the right field line to make it 1-0. Goldendale's big inning was the fourth. Josh Gibson got things started with a one-out double down the third base line. Moses Lake manager Connie Mack called for an intentional walk to Lou Gehrig, setting up a possible double play to end the inning. The strategy nearly worked. Nomar Garciaparra hit a fly ball to Willie Mays in center field, deep enough to move Gibson to third. Then Goslin tagged a 2-2 pitch from Maddux into the right field seats for a three-run shot that made it 4-0 for Goldendale.

G's starter Bob Gibson held Moses Lake in check, allowing just two hits over the first four innings, until the M's broke through in the fifth. Joe Mauer led off the frame with a double. Gibson got the next two hitters--Rabbit Maranville and Johnny Mize, pinch hitting for Maddux--on groundouts. But Joe Morgan laced a double down the right field line to score Mauer, and Mays followed with a single to right to plate Morgan and the Goldendale lead was cut in half, 4-2. Moses Lake had a chance for more. Stan Musial worked Gibson for a walk, and Mickey Mantle ripped a hard liner to center, but Griffey made a nice running catch to end the inning.

Goldendale immediately answered the M's score, when Josh Gibson greeted reliever Randy Myers with a homer deep to right to make it 5-2. Moses Lake cut into the lead again in the seventh. Edgar Martinez, pinch hitting for Myers, drilled a double to left center on the first pitch he saw. Morgan's groundout moved Martinez to third, where he scored on a sacrifice fly by Mays, and it was 5-3.  The G's answered again in the top of the eighth. Tug McGraw got the first two batters, but Gehrig lashed a homer to deep right to make it a 6-3 game.

Bob Gibson pitched eight solid
innings in the series opener.
Goldendale manager Clark Griffith was tempted to bring out the hook when Bob Gibson got into some boiling hot water in the bottom of the eighth. Mantle lined a single to right on the first pitch he saw, and Eddie Murray, also first-pitch swinging, laced a double to move Mantle to third. Eddie Mathews walked to load the bases with nobody out. Gibson carried on. Mauer lined a single up the middle, scoring Mantle to make it 6-4 and moving everyone up a base. But Gibson fanned Marty Marion on a 2-2 slider for the first out, then Paul Molitor, batting for McGraw, hit a hard one-hopper back to the mound and Gibson started a nifty 1-2-3 double play to end the threat.

Gibson was lifted for a pinch hitter in the top of the ninth, in which Goldendale did not score. Goose Gossage pitched the ninth. Moses Lake brought the tying run to the plate when Mays beat out an infield hit with one out. But Gossage fanned Musial and Mantle to nail down the win and give Goldendale a 1-0 lead in the best-of-seven series.

Game two of the series is set for October 13 at Larson Field. Tom Glavine is set to start for Goldendale and Pedro Martinez will go for Moses Lake.
