Goldendale bullpen falters, BI wins 9-7 in 10 to take 3-0 lead in championship series

GOLDENDALE, WA (GPS)--Goldendale, down 2-0 in the best-of-seven A to Z League championship series, took a two-run  lead into the ninth inning and came within an out of victory October 25 at Ekone Park. But a pair of pinch-hit homers tied it, and Bainbridge Island won it in the tenth 9-7 to move within a game of winning the series and crowning B as baseball's best letter.

Jeff Bagwell went 4-for-5 with
a grand slam and five RBI in
Bainbridge Island's 9-7 win
over Goldendale in game three
of the A to Z League
championship series.
Goldendale took the early lead, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first against Bainbridge Island starter Kevin Brown, one on a sacrifice fly by Ken Griffey, Jr. and the other on a solo homer by Josh Gibson. BI got one in the third off Tom Glavine. Bobby Bonds led off the frame with a double and eventually scored on a groundout by Craig Biggio to make it 2-1. That score held up until the sixth.

Bainbridge Island started the  top of the inning with back-to-back singles from Biggio and Cool Papa Bell to put runners on first and second. Barry Bonds came to the  plate and hit a potential double-play ball right back to the box, but Glavine fumbled the ball for an error and the sacks were full with nobody out. Jeff Bagwell cleared them off in a hurry, crushing a 2-2  pitch deep into the seats in left center for a grand slam and the Bees had the lead 5-2.

Glavine finished the inning without further incident, and Goldendale got back up off the mat in the bottom of the sixth. Tony Gwynn beat out an infield single with one out and, with two gone Gibson laced a double to left center and Gwynn scored all the way from first to make it 5-3. Bainbridge player/manager Lou Boudreau opted not to mess with Lou Gehrig and issued an intentional walk to the Iron Horse. With Goose Goslin at the plate Yogi Berra mishandled Brown's pitch for a passed ball, and the runners advanced to second and third. Boudreau then decided on a free pass to Goslin as well, loading the bases for righty-hitting shortstop Dick Groat. It was BI manager Clark Griffith's turn to make a move, sending Curtis Granderson up to hit for Groat. Griffith won the chess game when Granderson smoked a grounder just  inside the bag at first, easily scoring Gibson and Gehrig. Goslin was cut down at the plate on a good throw from Bobby Bonds and relay by Biggio, and the sixth ended with the score knotted at 5-5.

Rod Beck pitched two perfect
innings to seal Bainbridge
Island's 9-7 win in game three.
It remained tied until the bottom of the eighth, when Armando Benitez took over for Brown on the hill. Goldendale jumped on him right away. Gibson worked a walk on a 3-2 pitch and Gehrig, also on a full count, grounded a single into right field. Goslin then lined a base  hit to right, scoring Gibson to make it 6-5 and moving Gehrig to third. That was it for Benitez, who was replaced on the hill by Jeff Brantley. He got Nomar Garciaparra, in at short for Groat, to bounce into a 6-4-3 double play, scoring Gehrig and making it 7-5 Goldendale.

"Everyday Eddie" Guardado started the ninth on the hill for Goldendale. He'd come in to face some tough lefty batters in the eighth and pitched a 1-2-3 inning. He got Berra on a line-out to center for the first out in the ninth, and then Griffith brought in his closer, Goose Gossage. Boudreau sent up Wade Boggs to bat for Bobby Bonds, and Boggs grounded out to short for the second out. Boudreau then took himself out of the game and called on Jim Bottomley to pinch hit. Bottomley cracked a 1-0 pitch from The Goose deep to right center for a home run, and  it was 7-6 and Goldendale was still just an out away from a much needed win. Next up was Lou Brock, hitting for Brantley, and he took a 1-1 pitch right down the right field line and into the stands for a game-tying  homer. Those were the first at-bats in the series for both Bottomley and Brock. Boudreau, seeing the pinch hitter working, sent in Carlos Beltran to bat for Biggio, but he grounded to third to end the inning in a 7-all tie.

Closer Rod Beck came in for Bainbridge Island and retired Goldendale in order in the bottom of the ninth, sending the contest into extra innings. Tom Gordon took the hill in the tenth, replacing Gossage, who was lifted for a pinch hitter in the ninth. Gordon got ahead of Bell 1-2, but he grounded a single right up the middle for a base hit. Bell swiped second on the first pitch to Barry Bonds, and Griffith called for an intentional walk. Bagwell came through again, hitting a 2-2 pitch to deep left for a double, scoring Bell to make it 8-7 Bainbridge Island and moving Bonds to third. Gordon fanned George Brett, who fouled off three 1-2 pitches before missing on a nasty curve. Berra, though, ripped a single to shallow center, scoring Bonds; Bagwell tried to score with two outs and Griffey nailed him at the plate, but Bainbridge Island had the lead 9-7.

Beck stayed in for his second inning of work and retired Goldendale in order in the tenth. Griffey hit a routine fly to right, Gibson grounded to short, and Gehrig struck out. Bainbridge Island went up three games to none.

Game four will be played October 26 at Ekone Park. Griffith plans to send Dwight Gooden to the mound to start the contest. Boudreau will go with Tommy Bridges.
