Palmer fires no-hitter as Pasco drubs Long Beach

Jim Palmer of Pasco pitched a no-hitter at Long Beach July 16, narrowly missing a perfect game in the P's 8-0 victory. Palmer retired the first 19 batters he faced, losing the perfecto when he walked Barry Larkin with one out in the seventh. The next batter, Fred Lynn, nearly broke up the no-no with a slow roller down the third base line. Palmer, though, made an outstanding play, fielding the dribbler in front of third sacker Terry Pendleton, whirling and firing to Albert Pujols at first just in time to nab Lynn for the second out, moving Larkin to second. Buck Leonard then flied out to center to end Long Beach's only scoring "threat" of the game.

Mike Piazza homered leading off the second inning, providing what turned out to be the only run Pasco needed. But they piled up 14 hits off Bob Lemon and two L relievers, coasting to an 8-0 win behind Palmer's gem. Pujols had three hits, while Piazza drove in three runs and Tony Phillips had two RBI.
