Reggie Jackson was named player of the week in the A to Z League for the week ending July 3. Reggie batted .563 (9-for-16) for the week and had three home runs, four RBI, and seven runs scored. His OPS for the week was a whopping 1.882. Two other Jefferson County players were the top competitors for the prize. Chipper Jones, last week's POTW, batted .571 and drove in seven runs, and Dave Justice hit .526 and had three home runs and eight RBI. The trio were 1-2-3 for the week in batting average and OPS. It's little wonder the Jays went 4-1 for the week.

Wenatchee was the hottest team for the week, winning all five games they played. They've won six in a row and nine of their last 10 and lead the East Division by one game.

Wade Boggs had three hits and scored two runs, and George Brett and Yogi Berra homered as Bainbridge Island topped Aberdeen 4-1. Don Newcombe and Joe Nathan teamed up on a two-hitter and North Bend beat Bob Friend and Forks 2-1. Steve Rogers pitched a solid 7 1/3 innings and Edd Roush and Frank Robinson homered in Renton's 8-3 win over Hoquiam. Willie Stargell hit two home runs and drove in four to lead Snoqualmie to a 5-3 win over Jefferson County. Bobby Thomson hit a pinch single to plate Alan Trammell in the bottom of the 14th as Tumwater pulled out a 5-4 win over Long Beach. Early Wynn scattered 10 hits and struck out 10 and Wenatchee scored six in the bottom of the first on the way to a 7-2 win over Ocean Shores. Gary Carter hit a three-run homer during Cashmere's four-run eighth and the C's bested Goldendale 5-3. Davenport scored three in the top of the eighth on RBI triples by Joe DiMaggio and Martin Dihigo and defeated Kelso 5-3. Pasco scored two in the bottom of the ninth on RBI doubles by Buster Posey and Andy Pafko and beat Ephrata 4-3. Omar Infante's two-run triple was the key hit during a four-run eighth as Quincy won at Yakima 4-1.
June 28
Bert Blyleven pitched a five-hitter and Bainbridge Island defeated Aberdeen and Johnny Antonelli 2-0. Pop Lloyd homered, scored three runs, and drove in two during Long Beach's 6-4 win at Tumwater. Cashmere scored six in the first against Dwight Gooden and coasted to a 7-3 win behind Steve Carlton at Goldendale. Barry Zito pitched a two-hitter and fanned nine and Ross Youngs hit a three-run homer as Yakima blanked Quincy 7-0.
June 29
Bobby Abreu went 4-for-4 with a homer and three RBI, Dick Allen drove in five runs, and Henry Aaron went 4-for-5 and scored three runs as Aberdeen pummeled Hideo Nomo and everyone else North Bend threw out there, routing the N's 15-1 as Pete Alexander improved his record to 9-1. Harry Heilmann drove in four runs and Tim Hudson, back from the injured list, hurled seven strong innings as Hoquiam bested Snoqualmie 5-2. Adam Wainwright returned from the IL and allowed just three hits over seven innings, and Ted Williams and Ernie Whitt both drove in three runs, as Wenatchee blanked Long Beach 9-0. Cashmere scored four in the bottom of the seventh and came from behind to beat Kelso 5-4. Javier Vazquez allowed a run on five hits and fanned 10 in seven innings, and drove in two runs with a double in the fourth, improving his record to 8-3 as Vancouver topped Ephrata 4-1. Yaz drove in all of Yakima's runs with a pair of homers, but Moses Lake scored a run in the bottom of the tenth with the help of two errors and won the game 5-4. Brett hit a pinch homer leading off the top of the ninth and Bainbridge Island edged Quincy 4-3.
June 30
Babe Adams scattered eight hits over 8 2/3 innings and got last-out relief help from Rick Aguilera as Aberdeen beat North Bend 5-3. Tim Raines went 3-for-6, drove in three runs, and scored two, and Babe Ruth hit a three-run homer and Renton outscored Forks 10-6. Gary Sheffield's homer in the first inning turned out to be the only run in a great pitching duel as Snoqualmie and Bret Saberhagen, just off the injured list, bested Hoquiam and Carl Hubbell 1-0. Randy and Todd Jones combined on a six-hitter and Reggie and Justice homered as Jefferson County clobbered Tumwater 10-0. Dave Winfield and Frank White homered and Wenatchee beat Long Beach 6-4. Tony Oliva went 3-for-4, drove in three runs, and scored two, and Ocean Shores scored four in the bottom of the eighth and beat Goldendale 7-5. Charlie Keller hit and RBI triple in the top of the 15th and Harmon Killebrew plated him with a base hit and Kelso prevailed over Cashmere 4-2. Pasco got five singles to score three in the bottom of the eighth and beat Davenport 6-3. Both teams scored three in the tenth, even without the phony runner-on-second gag, but Vancouver got the winner in the top of the 11th on an RBI single by Jason Varitek and beat Ephrata 7-6. Bobby Bonds homered in the top of the tenth and Bainbridge Island defeated Quincy 6-5.
July 1
Hal Newhouser pitched a seven-hitter and fanned seven as North Bend eked out a 3-2 win over Aberdeen. Todd Frazier went 3-for-5 with a homer and scored three runs to lead Forks in a 12-4 romp over Renton. Roy Halladay became the loop's first 10-game winner, allowing just one run on six hits over eight innings as Hoquiam beat Snoqualmie 4-1. Reggie doubled in the bottom of the tenth to drive in Brian Jordan with the winning run in Jefferson County's 4-3 victory over Tumwater. Larry Walker and Lou Whitaker homered and David Wright had three hits in Wenatchee's 4-2 win at Long Beach. Hank Greenberg snapped a tie with a one-out homer in the top of the ninth and Goldendale topped Ocean Shores 4-3. John Candelaria earned his first win of the year with eight solid innings and Orlando Cepeda and Miguel Cabrera homered as Cashmere beat Kelso 5-1. Doug Decinces tripled with the bases loaded to highlight a four-run rally in the fifth and Davenport beat Pasco 5-2. Ellis Valentine doubled to plate Varitek in the top of the tenth and Vancouver beat Ephrata 4-3. Greg Zaun and Robin Yount homered and Zaun drove in four runs as Yakima edged Moses Lake 6-5. Monte Irvin homered and drove in three runs and Chris Ianetta also went deep as Quincy toppled Bainbridge Island 8-3.
July 2
Jefferson County bashed 17 hits, including five home runs, in a 16-2 rout of Tumwater. Bobby Allison knocked in four runs and Edgardo Alfonso drove home three and Aberdeen topped North Bend 8-1. Friend allowed just one run on three hits over eight innings, and George Foster slammed a three-run homer in the eighth to give Forks a 4-1 win over Renton. Rickey Henderson, Heilmann, and Rogers Hornsby homered to lead Hoquiam to a 7-2 win over Snoqualmie. Bernie Williams snapped a tie with a leadoff homer in the top of the ninth, and Wenatchee added two more in the inning and beat Long Beach 5-2. Lefty Grove won his eighth game, allowing just one earned run over eight innings as Goldendale beat Ocean Shores 3-1. Roger Clemens returned from the injured list and tossed seven decent innings, and Dave Concepcion homered and drove in three runs as Cashmere bested Kelso 5-4. Darrell Evans went 3-for-3 with a pair of homers and four RBI, and Dell Ennis also went deep and drove in three and Ephrata thumped Vancouver 7-3. Eddie Murray went 3-for-4 with a double, homer, and four RBI and Pedro Martinez won his ninth as Moses Lake defeated Yakima 8-5. Chase Utley had two home runs and five RBI to lead Quincy past Bainbridge Island 7-5.
July 3
Wes Ferrell pitched a five-hitter and Ron Fairly homered and scored twice as Forks blanked Renton 3-0. Randy Johnson allowed just two hits and one run and fanned 10 in seven innings and Jefferson County topped Tumwater 4-1. Josh Gibson, Lou Gehrig, and Goose Goslin all homered in Goldendale's 6-2 win at Ocean Shores. Andre Dawson went 4-for-4 with a homer, and DeCinces, Bill Dickey, and Bucky Frackin' Dent also went deep and Davenport topped Pasco 6-4.
Injuries
Mike Napoli suffered a severely bruised knee when hit by a pitch June 29 and will be out for a little over a week. Matt Nokes was called up to take his place on the roster. Gary Nolan left his June 30 start in the fourth inning because of shoulder issues and may be out of commission for about a month. Phil Niekro was called up to take Nolan's spot in the rotation. Lefty Gomez left his July 1 start in the second inning because of a sore bunion and will likely miss about three weeks. Goldendale called up Burleigh Grimes to join the rotation. Leon Day left his July 3 start in the second inning because of a bee sting that will keep him out of action for a couple of weeks. Davenport called up Larry Dierker to fill in for Day in the rotation.
